Laura shows up and tries to make sure Steele doesn't do anything (dishonest). She poses as his girlfriend. But when someone tries to kill Steele they wonder who's trying to kill him.

She tells him that he left L.A. without telling anyone he was going to Ireland. She leaves him alone when an orderly comes in to give him his meds but when she notices he can't be an orderly stops Steele from taking the medicine. So she takes Steele and they go on the run. Steele gets memories of being with a dead man. And they learn that his references are clues to a crime. And they eventually learn why he came to Ireland.

So they go to the bank to show the photos; Steele puts the photos in his wallet. On the way a boy bumps into Steele. When they try to show the photos, Steele's wallet is missing. That's when he realizes the boy is a pick pocket. So they try to find him. At the same time, the man they're investigating tries to find the boy by getting another pick pocket to find him and get the photos. Eventually they find him and Steele seems interested in trying to help him as well.

So while Mildred follows him, Steele has to explain to the insurance company that he lost the prop money they provided him for the poker game that he told them he would return. Mildred eventually tells them the thief is in Vegas. So Steele and Laura head there too. In the meantime, Norman Keyes the insurance investigator who was originally working the case thinks that Steele is not kosher so he checks him out and finds his several identities and thinks he could be the thief. At the same time the owner of the jewels, who is pushing the insurance company to pay, goes to Vegas himself.

Laura's hired by an antiques dealer to deal with a woman who shoplifts from his store. Laura meets with a man whom she's told is keeping the woman and asks to make restitution. But he denies knowing the woman she's talking about and when Laura shows him the items the woman supposedly stole, he tells Laura to tell her client that he can't be threatened. When the man is killed in what appears to be a suicide. Laura goes back to the store to talk to her client and finds a different man who claims he's the owner and he never hired her. She then goes to the woman's apartment and is told someone else lives there and they're out of the country. Steele and Laura investigate to find out what's going on.
