However aboard are rival relic hunter Tobar, German author on Precolumbian cultures Hans Lubeck, whose notes prove fascinating, and the elusive double agent Cate Hemphill alias Smith. The plane is shot down over jungle territory disputed by Mochicas demanding autonomy, government troops and a rogue war lord. The duo must deal with soldiers, fiends, the dangers of the jungle, keeping the relic safe and its activated spirit.

After deducing that the recording carpenter's grave must be fake, they take on the booby traps and new betrayal.

Agent Cate Hemphill seeks Nigel and Claudia to list plausible suspects, by reminiscing about various relic hunts on various continents (episode flashbacks), but all seem dead or otherwise accounted for. FInally they find that Edward Patel, the leader of a Kashmiri Kali cult, is alive, and has indeed captured Sydney as human sacrifice. His Indian student cahoot Mohandas Gujaret proves the key.

Sydney leaves weary Nigel to deal with the long-delayed accounting audit by foxy Maxine Schneider, as she can't wait to check out the Cleopatra exhibition at the Alexandria Museum. The jewel box on the brochure arouses inexplicable memories and knowledge of hieroglyphs in Claudia as if she were the reincarnated royal handmaiden, Iras. Her clues allow museum director Mohammed Kalifa to find a papyrus in a secret compartment, only to be stolen. His assistant Shareef is after the hidden necklace; the trail leads to a recent temple excavation.

She is believed to be mentioned in a Nostradamus prediction as the 'fox' to stop the crime. The key seems to be the missing '1600' medallion, presumably buried with the seer in a church. They are countered by rival relic hunter Antonio Castillo and a mystery killer, while tracking down the medallion to the monastery of its presumed thief, the discredited Cardinal Dallier. His journal, which they steal back, leads to the '1600', but the clock ticks toward the royal assassination and the mastermind strikes.

Despised dodgy relic hunter Vladimir Bugos fascinates Sidney and Nigel enough to join him in Carpathia by showing a map possibly leafing to the golden falcon of Maribor, which disappeared with princess Natasha's carriage. At their arrival in the Rumanian abbey of Lubjanka, he has disappeared. The villagers seem aloof or even hostile, with a werewolf legend spelling doom if the falcon is found. Indeed following the clues from Bugos leads after a car accident to the carriage and Vladimir in a cage inside a cave, but now the locals lay siege.

Louvre museum director Dr. Francois Jaebert's gray researcher Frederick Harris calls a marker on Sydney to help, with Nigel, track down his trail from a manuscript to the mythical, ruby-studded golden scepter in the secret tomb of the Germanic conqueror Gunther the Brave (circa 400 AD). The clues and matching crystal and stone tablet enable them to locate it in Kleine Burgh and get it past the deadly booby-traps. However they were spied upon by ruthless agents, and by the time they realize being used by Frederick he has already sold it to Turkish collector Aziz Habasi, whose diplomatic status complicates retrieving it to MacGyver level.

Sydney and Nigel investigate how her childhood friend Naomi, now a diva fashion model, is disfigured and in hellish pains during a photo shoot when she puts on an historical mask, once worn by a French Revolution executioner. As this fits a legendary curse, they travel to his native city of Bourg, where the previous owner suffered the same fate until Naomi put on the mask. They consult a macabre French expert on executions, who helps them trace the mask back to an orphanage-turned-boarding school. A villain learns a nightmare lesson before the curse is lifted.

Nigel has personal reserves about Sidney's next mission, the search for Tudor king Henry VIII's missing engagement ring for Anne Boleyn, as the case is presented by his ever-rivaling elder brother Preston Bailey, as executive in the British Museum. There CEO Dr. Anthony Cureton bluntly rejects their help, actually being in dirty dealings with a dodgy relic hunter, whose henchman fails to arrest the Bailey quest, which deciphers Henry's artistic riddles one by one in London and Leeds castle, while the brothers' ex/girl Amanda Reardon two-times them viciously.

Hungary, 1595: In a monastery, Knight Gabriel impales a demon, which then turns to stone. 2001: Nigel and Sydney arrive bearing a letter from a monk, but the abbot claims it is a forgery and shuts them out. Sydney decides to dig deeper.

Sydney's colleague and ex Allan Devaut seeks her help as he was injected with a fatal poison and has only 24 hours to earn the antidote by bringing to tycoon's son Jean Chabot the Knight Templars' magical tau cross, found in 1099 in crusader kingdom Jerusalem, the cure for Jean's dying father Albert, who promises his empire to whoever brings it to him. Claudia is installed in the Paris library to continue research while Allan, Nigel and Sydney got look for the final clues to the cross in a medieval dungeon ruin and a modernized castle. They are bothered by rival relic hunter Van Gelden and Jean's henchman, and have reason to mistrust the cross itself.
