Brilliant young Oxford graduate finds it quite a culture shock to become unorthodox New England archaeology professor Sydney Fox's teaching assistant. Nigel gets his baptism by fire in her more adventurous capacity, relic hunter, when they are commissioned by villagers from Nepal who scraped together their meager coins savings to find Buddha's bowl for their new shrine to prince Siddhartha, the original Buddha. Sydney finds her rival, less scrupulous relic hunter Stewie Harper is after the same- he was hired by bumbling Chinese banker Michael Chan to find the bowl so he can save his family's bank from financial ruin. The villagers handed them a map with cryptic clues, which they solve on the road, dealing with successive dangers and their own phobias.

Aaron Shiner hires Nigel and Sidney to prove that his grandfather was wrongly convicted for a murder set up by Al Capone, using his legendary but missing diamond-stud revolver. The trail leads to a stately hotel, about to be torn down, overbooked so they must oppose as married couple, rather awkward for shy gentleman Nigel, who has a reciprocal crush on history teacher Lori, who later accidentally joins the quest. Sid must survive a machine gun trap after finding the infamous swimming pool on the 'hidden' floor. It's only part of Capone's elaborate deception infrastructure, which does yield the relic, but they're also watched by cahoots of dirty cop Lawrence Zale, who help set up 'too honest' accountant Murray Shiner.

Returning from a polar relic hunt, Sydney's plane crash-lands on Nova Scotia due to a stowaway rival parachuting out with the prize. A group of nuns walking by rescues Sydney and takes her to the convent where her expertise is considered a sign: she's asked to search for a nun, Sister Evangeline, who went missing in the seventeenth century. She is presumed a martyr to French explorers who established the fort that later became the convent, which she allegedly still haunts. Nigel flies in to assist Sydney to examine the site, where a benefactor contractor executes repairs. A fire occurs, but the relic hunters persevere and confront the arsonists.

She refuses to go without Nigel, to a rebel region in Peru, to search the villa where war profiteer Arthur Stanton may have hidden it. Coping with the dangers of a war zone, including two-faced fixers, a land mined Nigel steps on, rebel patrols and HQ in the very villa, a deadly snake, strong indications that Derek is a traitor, and a rival US agent, they still face the trapped Paracelsus site and the dilemma what to do with the completed scrolls.

Dodgy relic hunter Stewie Harper bought a professorship in a tacky South African university, which gets Syd and Nigel ordered to assist him to track down the funeral rune stone of Viking King Jann of Norway. A page from a secret manuscript and a remarkably knowledgeable Viking bar waitress -- with a crush on Nigel -- send them to an old church, converted into a nude wellness spa. Only with the stone, they realize it's not Jann I but II, famous for a huge treasure raided in Northumbria, where he died in battle.

Stavros Vordalos, decent playboy son of Greek dodgy shipping billionaire Dimitri, uses gullible Claudia's Athens party holiday to deliver an intriguing pendant in Cretan marble, possibly the legendary key to king Minos's Minotaur maze, and sends a picture to intrigue Sydney, who rushes in with Nigel. Local archaeology professor Alex Tavina claims it's a fake, but is targeted himself by Dimitri's men, who have instructions to get, at any cost, the legendary golden twine which showed Araidne the way out. After the gang and Stavros find a surprising way in, it proves magically useful, with Dimitri's goon on their trail.

Nigel and Sydney fly to Ireland, to search for the crown of the last High King Brian Boru, he entrusted his crown to lord Hugh O'Donnell. The latter's descendants still suffer from the stigma of traitor who did homage to the conquering English king Edward. If they can find the crown, helped by Dublin heir Garrett O'Donnell, that allegiance may be proven a ploy. However they're not the only ones after the truly precious, historical relic, and the rivals are violent.

NIgel awakes the obvious gay interest of dodgy New York (fake) art gallery owner and fence Lagerfeld when he and Sydney are begged by foxy antiquities museum curator Elizabeth Rukeyser to retrieve before the Egyptian exposition opens the golden statue of cat goddess Mafdet, stolen from her apartment, where she sneaked it out to. The heist bares the mark of cat burglar Roselyn, who attacks them but ends up murdered for the statue, which was bought by crooked diplomat Juan Escuevero. Nigel ends up kidnapped at blade-point to force Sydney to find it before the midnight ritual sacrifice of an ancient Pharaonic servants order, Lagerfeld stupidly stumbles inside their hidden temple.

Magician Rex Rolands recruits Syd and Nigel to pose as his assistants to search the magic house installed in the huge Atlantic City home mansion of the Great Brodsky, who presumably stole the 'cursed' Hungarian royal scepter which disappeared during his performance at Habsburg emperor Franz's court. The relic hunters must deal with manager Malcolm Zales, who has a crush on Syd, the other resident/visiting magicians and the mansion's build-in traps, while an insider seeks to kill them.

Before the French Revolutionaries executed queen Marie Antoinette, she entrusted some of her 'crown jewel' diamonds to stable-hand and lover Laurent Halezan. The cocky incompetent juvenile heir to his wine estate, Jerome, is selling off all possessions. Louvre professor Dupuys guesses that trail and engages old friend Sydney to embark near Paris on a relic hunt with Nigel, lading there. They find he's being robbed by the delivery maid and extorted by a loan-shark Paris gangster, who gets and auctions the wine bottle form the revolution years suspected to contain the treasure, but that proves an outdated trail.
