Lacking troops or funds to defend Scotland, Francis resorts to a last resort: engaging a ruthless privateer, Martin, whose hefty price includes a noble bride, which proves a paradoxical double frustration for 'chosen' Greer. Francis worries that his medical relapse spells an early demise and desperately seeks to protect his loved ones, and urgently recall kid brother Charles, who must be groomed as successor to the French throne, but isn't committed and remains under negative maternal influence. Repudiated by Francis for plotting against Mary, Catherine stages her death and crosses to England, where she counsels the Virgin Queen to seize Scotland from her Tudor rival now France is too weak to help out and have Mary discredited by convincing the pope of her debauchery.

Bash investigates Delphine's claim of innocence of mysterious murders in the village.

Learning that the misogynist Protestant preacher John Knox is leading the persecution of Catholics in Scotland, Mary asks the Vatican to finance troops. Pressed for information on Mary, hostage Lola refuses to comply, but tells Elizabeth of discovery that William has been paying courtesans to dress up as Elizabeth for his pleasure. Elizabeth uses this lead to uncover that William is in love with her and poisoned her, causing her miscarriage; she banishes him from court for good.

No Way Out

Mary asks Gideon for help finding a way out and has sex with him; soon after, Gideon kills his embassy secretary Jeffrey, Elisabeth's loyal spy, to protect Mary. Seeing her lover Robert Dudley is widely hated in England, Elizabeth creates him Earl of Leicester and commands him to sail to France and wed Mary. Hostage Lola reaches out to the heartbroken Elizabeth. Mary asks if Greer will return with her to Scotland, but Greer declines. Catherine is threatened by the mysterious thirteen Red Knights, who seek revenge for the execution of thirteen knights by king Henry years ago, Bash and Christophe investigate.
