Edinburgh police DS John Rebus nearly strangled a career criminal in an ambulance, seasons ago. His former partner, now his chief, has him train junior partner Siobhan Clarke and puts them on the embarrassingly public mugging of career criminal Jimmy McJagger during his transport to court by masked men, the MO suggesting army veterans, as Rebus is. So just must contact fellow vets, notably homeless Andy Rolland, his estranged brother Michael and his lover's wheelchair-struck husband. Divorced John's daughter, spoiled by mother's millionaire new husband, scolds him as another row with Michael complicates the rapport with her cousins, Liam and Michael Jr. Spying on the neighbors in his derelict quarter, Michael spots what duly looks like a drug dealers hole, and ends up intruding it, so he can settle his debts by robbing the scared knaves Jack and mate, who sell drugs there for gang boss Darryl Christie.

After visiting fellow veterans in poverty, John's brother Michael takes in desperate Andy Rolland, who proves must grateful. They raid the teenager small dealers who work from the Fife apartment building across Michael's home, which earns the knaves not just a furious lecture from their cruel dealer Darryl Christie, who cuts off one of Kai's fingers and has his mate Jack volunteer 'anything else', resulting in him getting arrested after killing Jimmy McJagger in hospital despite a police guard. Investigating without official mandate, John soon suspects from the MO veterans were involved, like Michael and his mates. John breaks up with his lover, as her husband, a retired cripple cop, asks him to find the lover and a crime baron tries to blackmail him. Unlike his ex, John sees no problem in her rich new husband setting up a trust fund for their daughter, a million as for his own son.

After further investigation, ignoring his bureaucratic boss' by the book obstruction, including leaning heavily on drug boss Shaun Strang at his gym and interrogating the surviving abused shrimp dealer knave, John realizes its must be the work of vets and probably includes his brother. He also finds out his lovers' cripple husband George Blantyre got blackmailed after taking drug money loot.
