Meanwhile, his ballooning companion Barney, who was thought to be lost, miraculously turns up on a beach in New Zealand. But not before the Australian and NZ Navies have been called out at great expense to both. Thompson's return has not only Cleaver, but a few other people in high places feeling very nervous, including ex-Premier and now broadcaster Cal McGregor. Thompson also has sway with a certain highly-placed policewoman, so when Cleaver's protection officer is murdered - with ex-wife Wendy's help, he goes into hiding.

Cleaver has been hiding out in the country for four months posing as a writer, but his cover is blown when a new acquaintance - a fan of Australian Story - insists they watch, and as Barney's odyssey unfolds on screen, inevitably his best friend Cleaver's photo appears as well. But Barney's partner Nicole is feeling betrayed when she's not mentioned at all. Meanwhile, Missy blows into town on the back of a drug- fuelled sojourn in LA, with Cleaver nowhere to be found. As she searches for both Cleaver and a drug dealer, Barney and Nicole decide to intervene. David and Scarlet's romance is blossoming, but her kids and are out to sabotage the relationship. Meanwhile, as Opposition Leader, David has been speaking out about Thompson still being a free man, with witnesses disappearing and three judges recusing themselves. Back in the bush, news spreads quickly about Cleaver's real identity, and it isn't long before Thompson's goons arrive on the scene.

Cleaver has been forced back to the city, and Thompson's lawyer has decided the best way to silence him is to have him join their team. If it means staying alive and money coming in, Cleaver is prepared to go along. He's also been evicted, and ex-wife Wendy reluctantly takes him in. Meanwhile, the most serious charges against Thompson are mysteriously dropped when Cal McGregor, the Premier and the DPP realise that he knows where all the skeletons are hidden. But the drug charges are still pending, and Thompson has a plan to put his old employee Cleaver firmly in the frame. Barney is reeling from the costs of his rescue, and when David and Scarlet's romance is slowly being scuttled by her children, she and Barney look to each other for comfort. Missy is desperate for drugs, and Cleaver's good-hearted attempt to rescue her falls on deaf ears.

Thompson has Cleaver in the frame for drug trafficking, but Wendy comes to the rescue. David is desperate to save his relationship with Scarlet, and Nicole is scrolling through her ex-husband posts. With the more serious charges against him dropped, Thompson uses his history with Cleaver to plant him firmly in the frame for the long-standing drug trafficking charges. Cleaver finds himself cornered, until dependable Wendy and her record-keeping habits come to the rescue. Meanwhile, Missy's strange behaviour comes to the attention of Cleaver's' old nemesis Cal McGregor who sees a chance to use her to bury Cleaver once and for all. David is desperate to save his relationship with Scarlet, but she and Barney are talking reconciliation. While Nicole, feeling rejected, is scrolling through her ex-husband Bevan's posts. And, at what was meant to be a joint surprise birthday party and a celebration of his freedom, Cleaver's estranged sister Jane announces she's running for the Senate. Finally, David's efforts to hold on to Scarlet have devastating results.

Barney and Cleaver are back on speaking terms and share a case; Cleaver rescues Missy who's been enjoying a cocaine-hazed few days with Cal McGregor, and appeals to Wendy's better nature to take her in. It's been two months since Scarlet's death and a devastated Barney is trying to make his kids' life as normal as possible. Wendy has decided she has to move on, as she dreams of a life in Sardinia, so she tells Cleaver it's time to go. Scarlet's death sees Barney and Cleaver back on speaking terms and sharing a case where society paparazzi Reggie Walsh, is charged with committing a lewd act and defiling a photo in a client's home. Never one to miss an opportunity, Cleaver enlists Reggie's investigative skills to help him find Missy, who has vacated her flat and disappeared. Meanwhile, David is charged with Scarlet's murder, and his barrister is urging him to plead involuntary manslaughter - because who's going to believe a politician who's been sleeping with his friend's wife. While Barney is convinced he killed her, Cleaver can't stand to see David wrongly convicted, and advises him against pleading guilty. And Cleaver and Barney are still at loggerheads over who's responsible for the balloon rescue costs. Cleaver finally rescues Missy who's enjoyed a cocaine-hazed few days with her new found friend Cal McGregor, and he appeals to Wendy's better nature to take her in. With Fuzz, his girlfriend Monique, Cleaver, and now Missy under her roof, Wendy wonders what happened to leaving the past behind. As Nicole's relationship with Bevan hots up, she and Barney agree that they should part. And Nicole finds work again when Cleaver sets up shop in a series of coffee shops around town.

Cleaver defends David and Barney sees it as a betrayal; Fuzz gets Missy drugs and then she seduces him. Wendy has a date with an old flame; and a free David announces he's standing for the Senate. Against his better judgement David agrees to let Cleaver defend him on the murder charge, while Missy, having been locked in a bedroom at Wendy's to 'detox', has sweet-talked Fuzz into getting her drugs and then seduced him. When a drug-addled Cal arrives searching for her, Cleaver and Fuzz manage to send him on his way, but Missy, high again, makes her escape. Fuzz is off in hot pursuit, and Wendy and Cleaver after them both. And bizarrely, right there in their blue ribbon Liberal neighbourhood, they stumble across Cleaver's sister, Jane, campaigning for the Greens. Wendy, determined to move on, is having dinner with an old flame, Jack, and Cleaver's plans to woe her back are slowly crumbling. Bevan and Nicole are whole-heartedly into their affair, but Barney is a wreck, and is devastated when he arrives at court to see Cleaver and Nicole in David's corner. Barney perjures himself, so when the prosecution tears David apart, Cleaver has to find a way to get to the truth. When Cleaver trips Max up on the stand, Barney knows it's over. Cleaver and Nicole share a concerned look as a dejected Barney leaves the court, and decide that they have to intervene. David, now a free man again, announces he's quitting state politics and standing as a candidate for Labor in the Senate.
