Francesca and her father and children are caught up in a turf war when Paul's rival torches Frank's house. Worse is to come when,on 'business' for Paul,Francesca witnesses a gangland killing. The whole family is moved to a safe house but Francesca nonetheless refuses to give information to DCI Jo Fontaine though Jo uses CCTV footage to watch Paul asks Francesca to take on a supposedly legitimate car-valeting service. One of Paul's runners,ageing career criminal Brendan,is also imprisoned,antagonizing daughter Aisling who wants him to give her away at her up-coming wedding. Harriet is on cloud nine though now she is dating padre Ian and is supportive of Gavin's wish to convert to Islam. Mother of three Kim is less enchanted when her husband Mick is arrested on sexual charges against Jaiden,a troublesome member of Mick's junior football team. She determines to prove his innocence.

Kim is asked by Mick's lawyer to gather proof of his innocence but a possible witness is not keen to speak to police for fear of reprisal whilst Kim is questioned after trying to talk to Jaiden. Her best bet is Mick's friend Danny, a prosecution witness with whom she had a fling and who suggests that if this comes out in court it may discredit him,rather than change his story.Ian prevents Gavin from converting but Harriet is concerned her son is selling the presents he asks her to bring in in order to buy friends. Harriet and Ian have a romantic dinner with him hinting of marriage. Francesca starts the car cleaning business with Margaret,a crooked accountant who helps her set up a series of bank accounts in false names.She is still pursued by DCI Fontaine over the death of Pete,the man she saw get shot. Brendan tells Aisling he has begun a Practical Parenting course but she is unimpressed. She is befriended by Francesca's drug-dealing son Matt,with whom she has sex despite having a boyfriend. In the meantime Francesca's daughter Lauren finds her fake passports and shows them to Frank.

Frank confronts Francesca over her criminal activities before somehow getting to see Paul without a visiting order and demanding hush money . Paul is more concerned with Matt's drug-dealing,berating him for neglecting his school studies. Francesca,however,does not condemn the dealing though she is unaware that DCI Fontaine is watching him and has pulled in one of Francesca's associates regarding the murder of rival gangster Paul. Matt's main priority is consoling Aisling after Brendan dies of cancer. Harriet,happy with Ian,befriends a tearful Kim,who admits to her her affair with Danny. Mick finds out from Shaheen and refuses to see Kim,though when she returns home Kim ends up calling a truce with Jaiden's mother Vicky,who offers to help. Harriet is shocked to see a weird girl,Kayleigh,smuggle a knife in for Gavin.She tells Ian,which leads to Gavin being put in solitary confinement and attacking Ian.

Mick is released after Vicky has persuaded Jaiden to confess that he was lying but he is ill at ease back home,particularly in the knowledge that Kim had an affair. Nonetheless they reconcile and resume their family life. Gavin is charged with attacking Ian but is annoyed with Harriet when she visits. With Ian moving to a rural parish Harriet must choose where her future lies and tells Gavin to grow up as she will be seeing him no more. Francesca is arrested and bailed for the murder of Chris Pearson,only to find that the Pearson gang have kidnapped Lauren. She goes to see DCI Fontaine to explain about the money scams but in the meantime Paul has sent a message to Matt,who is now dating Aisling and dissuading her from leaving for London. Matt sets out with the ransom for his sister but before the police can reach him there is another shooting and another prisoner to be visited.
