The new school term begins and the staff are confronted with a few changes. Mr Hedges decides to use betting as a way to educate the children on mathematics.

Sharon is followed on the common by a dirty old man. She reports the incident to Mr Hedges putting the whole school into an uproar. The next night a number of students and the police return to where Sharon was attacked. Everyone is surprised to see the janitor Mr Potter hiding in the darkness.

Mr Hedges organises a boxing match for the students after the local school inspector criticised the school for its lack of sports programs.

Hedges gets the students all excited about animal conservation and it a fit of enthusiasm they decide to adopt an animal from the local zoo. Potter becomes outraged when its discovered they adopted a desert rat.

Everybody is rushing to be ready for the Fenn Street open day when Hedges realizes he knows nothing about the event. Apparently because of past experience the class had been allocated to look after the coats and drinks. Hedges decides he needs to change things.

After a drunken night out, Bernard wakes up in a strange woman's bed, but when she turns out to be Sharon's mother, Bernard decides that he only has one course of action.

Mr Hedges believes that the students need to get out and meet some of the older members of community to help them get a better understanding of their place in society.

Doris is offered the opportunity to move to Australia. While she considers her options the other teachers are over the Moon at the prospect, while some begin to consider the options for her replacement.

The school principle Mr Cromwell decides he wants the school divided up into houses. Rather than allocate the students to a house he wants the students to find ways to make their own selection.

To cover up the terrible cooking being produced by the kitchen at the school, Potter has been supplying the headmaster with imported meals. The staff and students are at breaking point and not willing to let go this time.

The school is celebrating the headmasters birthday with varying success. A number of the students seem to be having romantic issues that Sir feels he has to intervene to help resolve.

Sir fools the class into deciding to go see a production of Romeo and Juliet. On the day of the show two of the girls dress provocatively causing further scandal through-out the school.
