Ginny Butler becomes the first female to start in the Major Leagues by starting for the San Diego Padres. Despite, or perhaps because of the fanfare and media circus that surrounded her, she only throws 10 pitches. Ownership forces the Padres manager to let Ginny start another game instead of sending her back to the minors. After the game, she practices her pitches with her father. Periodic flashbacks tell the story of Ginny's path to the Majors including her father teaching her to pitch, winning the state championship and getting noticed by scouts for the Padres. In her second start, Padres catcher Mike Lawson talks to Ginny and tells her to start playing for herself, not for anyone else. This helps her snaps out of her nerves and pitches well into the seventh inning.
