Comedian Griff played the part of Toad in a play for a while and seems to identify with the character. He tells us the story of the book's author Kenneth Graham who was born in Edinburgh but spent his younger life near the banks of the Thames. He was orphaned at a very young age and raised by his grandmother and Uncle. This perspective is interspersed with excerpts from the book. We also learn of his late age marriage and about his only son, Alastair.
