Episode 1
Arthur Wanamaker, a land baron based in Denver, is going home by train and when he arrives he is found dead. And a man who works in one of his mines is found with him. Jared Stone, the Marshall goes there and takes the man in. Everyone wants to hang the man but Stone wants to investigate. Stone is informed that because Wanamaker was killed while on a train, the railroad deems it as their concern so they send a Pinkerton Detective, Lattimer Finch to investigate. And he uses new methods to help find out what happened like finger printing and forensic medicine. Stone learns Wanamaker was a troubled man and there are other people who wanted him dead.

Episode 2
Eric Soper receives a sentence of death by hanging for his killing of a man in Silver City. Marshal Stone takes the prisoner back from Central City to Silver City to hang, but on the way, realizes that Soper has poor eyesight and probably could not have committed the murder. Stone enlists Detective Finch's help in proving whether Soper committed the murder and finding who id, in case Soper didn't. They are in a rush as the hanging is scheduled to take place on a new automated hanging gallows in a couple of days.

Episode 3
Silver City is attempting to persuade the state's election convention to be held there and showing off the new electric power line being built into the town. During the construction, and the convention representatives visit, a body is found which leads back to the saloon. Tom, a boy in town, wants Amy, Katie's little sister, to go to Denver with him for the weekend where he is going on business. Katie, of course, doesn't want her 15-year-old sister going off alone with a boy. Marshal Stone and Det. Finch are hard-pressed to solve the murder quickly, so Mayor Smith doesn't lose the chance to have the convention in Silver City.

Episode 4
Marshal Stone finds a burned house with bodies of a man and a woman who have been burned and shot. He suspects an Arapaho brave as being responsible. The Silver City council votes to call in the Army to handle the situation as they fear another attack, although Marshal Stone suspects this is not an Indian uprising but something more personal between the killer and the victims.
