when the wife of a powerful man is killed, Captain Woodrow Paris is tasked with investigating. Initially they learn the woman's been having an affair, so it could have been her lover. But Paris also learns that her husband's been abusive towards her. When Paris tries to investigate, the man threatens to not only remove Paris but to have him demoted. Paris tries to make sure he has the right evidence.
