Principal Conklin stops by Miss Brooks' rooming house on his way to the engraver's to tell Miss Brooks to add an essay question to the test, and that he's having "The Yodar Kritch Award for Unique Achievement in English" engraved on the cup. As Mr. Conklin is in the kitchen bringing out the tray of coffee for Mrs. Davis, Walter Denton arrives to invite Miss Brooks to a party after school. He begins to tell her about his call to Harriet Conklin earlier, who said her father is on the warpath. Conklin walks in while Walter is making disparaging remarks about him. Conklin loses his appetite and leaves. Denton explains that Mr. Boynton has also been invited, and Walter describes a set-up to have Miss Brooks and Mr. Boynton walk through a garden to find a pair of love birds rubbing beaks in a birdbath, implying that it should make Mr. Boynton romantic. At lunch, Winston "Bones" Snodgrass is feeling punk because his father has banned all parties for the semester, including that afternoon's barbecue being held at his house, unless he wins the Yodar Kritch Cup. Miss Brooks enlists Harriet and Walter to tutor Bones. Bones gets confused, and Miss Brooks attempts to give him a short course in English before he takes the test. There is a scene where Miss Brooks reads a long, complicated rule on the prepositional phrase written on the blackboard, and presents another long, complicated discourse on the subjunctive. All the students take the test, and Harriet, Walter, and Bones join Miss Brooks in Mr. Conklin's office to award the Cup to the winner.
