After Rachel told Cooper she's pregnant and caused the wedding limousine she kidnapped to drive off the bridge, Nathan dived after them. Lucas arrives, Cooper is saved from the flooded wreck, hero Nathan is already out and wakes up alright in hospital. Dan's guilty mind still sees Keith's juvenile appearance as well as the red 'murderer' painting he fails to wash from his wall, a terrifying combination when police arrives- only to report Nathan is in hospital. Lucas worries about Brooke knowing he kissed Peyton, twice, and which teenage girl kit-tested positive like his ma. Rachel tells Brooke she only pretended to be pregnant. Dan promises Deb, who confessed she attempted to burn him alive, a fearful payback. The police already suspects former race-pilot Cooper didn't just loose control of the wheel, Haley scolds culprit Rachel as an incorrigible lives-wrecker which should never again cross the path of Nathan, who sadly senses more harm: Cooper has a major cardiac arrest. Peyton tells Lucas her biological father has a son, Derek. Brooke makes up with Rachel, accepts to move in with her, but tells Lucas she can no longer continue 'us' for him, not herself.

Now Cooper is conscious again and questioned by the police, he takes the blame for driving the limousine, which gets unworthy ex-lover Rachel off the hook, before she confesses her 'pregnancy' was her most unforgivable lie. Nathan tells him and Lucas he thinks he didn't save anyone, even needed to be saved himself, and when Lucas assures not to have done it that he believes he saw their late uncle Keith. Dan keeps imagining people and things calling him a murderer. Cooper leaves town, Rachel invites Brooke in vain to start picking up guys that very night. After Haley reports Deb's insulting attitude chased a customer and her gun accidentally went off in the coffee-shop, the junkie rather quits the partnership with Karen, who sees her pills, then go back in rehab. Nathan refuses to let his immature parents' problems cross his own life again, he concentrates on the play-offs as ticket for a scholarship. Peyton suggests Lucas may patch up with Brooke by taking her place in the annual ritual shoplifting, but they meet there as Brooke never shows up, yet... When Peyton calls her half-brother Derek, she's told to butt out, but somewhat later he turns up at her doorstep, unannounced...

Derek makes a cool first impression on chaperon Lucas and half-sister Peyton. Nathan is back in Tre Hill High-school and focused on the Ravens team, which desperately needs his superior talent to make up for a miserable start of the Senior's and coach's last shot at a seasonal state title- he flies like a god, until drowning nightmares make him miss a throw and mentally melt down for the rest of the first period. Brooke is in state of open war with Peyton, so she kisses Derek at the victory pool party she throws at Rachel's. Lucas says he's trough with Brooke, Mouth is just drunk (?) and depressed. Dan's Keith-nightmare continues, even make him consider suicide. Haley's sulking about Nathan's absent mind and talking to Rachel makes him explain it's the idea Keith pulled him out, normal according to Peyton; they kiss up.

While Dan's bloody visions continue, forcing him to start confidential therapy, even he is part of the family intervention to put Deb back in pills rehab, she walks out and even bursts into Nathan's class to demands her pills, which she grabs after he says 'them or me'. Nathan trades his car for a motorbike plus $200 cash and less fuel bills. Rachel advises Brooke an abortion rather then parenting like her folks, both are invited by goody-two-shoes Shelley Simon -a former slut herself- to join her 'Clean Teens' virginity club (masturbation only). Frustrated Nathan wounds his arm in a wild bike ride; Haley rages again at Deb, whose revenge is to fire Karen from Trick. Rachel becomes lingerie model for Maxim. After Karen consulted his doctor, coach Whitey allows Lucas back to the Ravens, but he refuses to go half-way. Peyton and Derek enjoy getting closer; when she tells him she'll wants Lucas back now he broke up with Brooke, Derek tells Brooke is pregnant and Lucas promised to stop talking to Peyton if Brooke takes him back, stirring all of them. Lucas finds the lie out, Peyton thinks it's a mistake. Rachel tells Nathan she saw Keith too, Haley tells Lucas she's the expectant mother, but scared. Derek makes a whore wear a blond wig in his Peyton-shrine.

Peyton finally realizes that her brother Derek isn't her real brother but in fact the very same person that's been sending her online messages using the alias "watchmewatchyou". When she learns this and starts pushing him away, Derek breaks into her house and tries to hurt her. She is saved in the last minute by her real brother Derek and Lucas. In the end, Derek disappears after surviving a bad fall through Peyton's window.

Mouth receives an unexpected proposal, and an old acquaintance of Dan's, Daunte, shows a sudden interest in Nathan.

Teacher Nick Chavez drops in at his student-lover Brooke's T.A.R.T. fashion show where Mouth is helping out and gets close to model Tia who suggests her friends and her could end his virginity that evening, but he already has a date with Gigi. Haley has decided to follow Nathan to Duke and starts babysitting for experience and income, but even the first two kids are more then she can handle, while Nathan, who first said he would only like their own child, surprised both of them as a natural dad: the rascals respond great to his basketball lesson. Derek shows Peyton she must by more careful and gets her to return to school, but Lucas must take her back after an anxiety attack; Derek insists she must face her fear as Lucas cannot protect her, and gets her a boxing practice dummy. Daunte tells Nathan he wants pay-back with absurdly high interest unless he doctors the Ravens to win with less then 10 points difference. Deb admits to her doctor she needs pills addiction therapy but steals a subscription pad, and her misbehavior at the drug store gets her arrested; Dan promises to save her bacon if she signs Trick back over to Karen. Rachel makes the cover of "Maxim", then tells Brooke Nick flirts (actually she did), and makes the principal suspend Nick. Nathan finds Deb had squandered everything from the safe, which he hoped to borrow from to pay off Daunte. Meanwhile, Lucas guesses Nathan's deal with Daunte, scolds him but can't bring himself to cross it by scoring. Brooke finds Nick with one of her models and now believes Rachel.

Nothing Left to Say But Goodbye

Instead of wiping Nathan's debt as agreed, Daunte now uses the deliberate lousy last game to blackmail him into losing the state championship, or he'll tell Duke about the cheating. Just now coach tells Nathan they'll both get a public award at the Ravens' annual sports banquet, and Whitey really wants this very last title of his career. When Nathan bravely tells Daunte he won't bend, the next clear threat is to bust his leg permanently. The fake Derek is finally arrested. Rachel asks Haley for tutoring as she's about to fail calculus and thus miss out on normal graduation, but is told she's too unlikeable; however Lucas, Karen and Nathan convince Haley to give Rachel a last chance. When Karen hears Lucas is going to the banquet with Brooke, she accepts Dan's invitation to go together; Mouth is with Gigi despite Rachel's maneuvers, Peyton brings Derek in uniform. After the acceptance speeches, tearful for coach, Nathan finally confides his desperate situation to Dan, who waves his checkbook- in vain...

Nathan is even more miserable after having to admit to Lucas, who, like Coach Whitey, expects it to be his last game, that he sees no alternative but lose the state championship everyone in One Tree Hill has been hoping for. Lucas confides in Skills, and they resolve to freeze Nathan and win despite him. Karen drags Deb along. The cheerleaders complain mutually, until pregnant Haley needs to be brought to hospital. Without superstar Nathan the Ravens lose the first half badly against Pontiac. After hearing Haley is okay and that it's a boy, Nathan plays to win again, so the Ravens win it in the very last second. While the others celebrate, Dan offers to buy off Daunte's fury but hears the criminal's objective was revenge on him rather than money...

Walking out after winning the state championship, Nathan was about to tell Haley everything when she sees a car approaching, pushes him away but gets ran over badly. The irate father-to-be runs to the car which slipped and stopped, drags Daunte out and knocks him senseless- Dan comes to stop him, but too late- the otherwise so selfish father sends Nathan away and risks everything, pretending to have killed the monster himself when the police arrives. Lucas has a heart-attack causing a coma, during which he is 'visited' by his beloved late Uncle Keith, who shows him things would be even worse for his loved ones if he hadn't been good, but Lucas asks more questions then even a more eloquent spirit could answer. When the doctors tell Nathan the baby isn't even a priority as Haley is hurt so badly, he breaks down, telling Brooke and Peyton it should have been him, the guilty one, he should have died in the river; he even cries out Keith shouldn't have saved him. Peyton finds some comfort in the record-shop; Brooke comes make up. Dan assures Nathan, who visits him in prison, he will be all right; Keith comes haunt him worse then ever, saying "I forgive you- but hell won't". Nathan desperately prays in church for another miracle, not hearing Keith whisper it will be OK, and indeed Haley wakes up, even the baby is saved. Keith fails to teach Lucas the truth about his death, but does convince the kid life is worthwhile.

Everything in Its Right Place

Dan refuses an investigation and plea's guilty, forbids Nathan to confess, willing to bring a supreme paternal sacrifice atoning for his failings and to pay for his other sins. Dan is released after the autopsy shows that Daunte died from the shock of the crash, even before he was beaten. Seeing how worried Haley was for Daunte's grieving family, Nathan has already confessed to her about his panic deeds. Even Lucas can't convince her he only acted out of unconditional love, so she moves in with Karen. Brooke haughtily took her calculus test without cheating, but got an F, so she and Rachel break in at school to falsify her score, get caught and have to pretend they came to join Shelley's Virgins for Life. Deb tries to escape from rehab before she realizes she can just sign out. Gigi dumps Mouth because he's going to college next year. Nathan tells Haley what he can and won't do to get her back. Peyton makes up her mind about Lucas, who takes Keith's advice.

Clean Teens president Shelley Simon is ironically the one who presents man-eater Brooke to the virgin club's cute new male member, Chase Adams; he doesn't respond to her usual moves, but asks her as Maths tutor, in exchange for dinner. An intercepted note in class gets Lucas and Peyton's love made public, and both of them detention. Nathan is desperate for a job, but enough for Skills proposal to try together the $10,000 amateur night at the strip club? Deb scolds Karen for keeping Dan's company, but she even invites him to dinner; he tells Deb she was second choice, Karen the love of his life. When Nathan hears how unhappy pregnant Haley feels the prom is in four weeks but she'll still be on crutches and none of her party clothes still fit, he changes his mind about a strip act- Mouth is to teach them choreography, but Peyton must supply a suitably easy song for a naturally bad dancer like the gorgeous star athlete. At an emergency club meeting Shelley exposes Rachel on video as sort of a party stripper; she walks, Brooke stays for Chase's company. Principal Turner tells all tutors about the stolen exam papers, and guarantees expulsion. At the cemetery Lucas gets the feeling Keith wasn't killed by Jimmy, tells Peyton and Karen but really just wants it all to end. Because Dan told her Nathan long gave up on her, Deb barges in at their son's place; seeing her knock over Haley, he throws her out telling her to forget all about him and stay away. Chase tells Brooke he chose virginity after finding out his only serious girl-fiend cheated on him with his best friend. As Skills gets cold feet at the last moment, 'Double Trouble' starts with Nathan and Mouth, but his girl-friend Bevin gets Skills to join in half-way; the girls have a ball, and Haley is in heaven at home when her dream-prince shows the proceeds got them a maternity prom dress. Chase's first tutoring session turns into a romantic first date, complete with kissing finale. Peyton's first home-baked cookies are burnt, the second batch salty as the sea, so the similar dough is used for a food-fight with Lucas. Deb ODs and phones Dan to take care of Nathan, he quickly has her committed by ambulance and goes on to dine with Karen.

As class assignment for a teacher who explains they now are what their classmates think, in stereotypical terms, but that will change in the real world after graduation, the kids must draw a name to spend the rest of the class with, and return each with a picture representative of that partner for use in the yearbook, after some tasks to get to know each-other better, such as telling something personal and a secret or doing an impression. Lucas tells loner Glenda Farrell his new dream, now basketball is over, is to become a novel author; she confides her terrible relation with her mother. Brooke tells Chase Adams the truth about her calculus, and is forgiven. Skills tells Haley he's desperate not to end up in the factory like his father, she retorts motherhood is great but she still wants to make her mark, at least as a teacher. Shelley confides she only started Clean Teens after being dumped hard to Mouth, who is tired of being the 'good kid' and starts kissing. Peyton warns Nathan even a perfect father must think of himself too, he admits for a second he felt loosing his ma Deb by her suicide might be for the best.

Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers

Haley believes Brooke didn't cheat, but Rachel has to stop her turning herself in by pointing out the morality clause in a Victoria's Secret contract. Principal Turner holds a test, which she passes, Rachel is caught and hence Haley sacked as tutor. With Karen's permission, Dan helps Lucas prepare for the prom, buying him an Armani and advises him to stop worrying about Keith's death; Karen overhears them both having the heart disease. Deb didn't expect any visitors after her misbehavior, but Nathan comes tell her she's not sick but weak, and must get her act together or she won't have anything to return to; when Haley hears Deb still worries about her living alone after her release, she offers to go live in the house with Deb, safe for her and saving them a fortune; when the boys clean up and notice all the alcohol, they seize the ideal opportunity to have a state championship celebration party that evening. Lucas tells Peyton he gave Glenda his manuscript; she signs over her fashion sketches to delighted designer-to-be Brooke. At the party, Haley publicly slaps Rachel for the cheating, but Brooke learns her passing test was switched by Rachel who took the blame to save the fashion dream. Virgins Mouth and Shelley declare and make love, Skills catches them still practically nude, she rushes out because of Clean Teens, saying him goodbye. Chase kisses Brooke back in party mood. After a good dinner, Karen accepts to be prom chaperon with Dan. An old video tape of his wild days with Peyton drives Nathan outside, where he frolics with Brooke, but when the noise attracts even Peyton, who was making love with Lucas, they see another couple kissing...

Prom Night at Hater High

Two years ago, when Peyton dumped her still wild, philandering boyfriend Nathan the n-th time for being an inconsiderate bastard, he wasted no time to jump in bed with drunk Brooke and taped the scene himself. Now Peyton sees that at the pre-prom party, and knocks her 'rival' a black eye, just as publicly. Nathan assures Haley it was before he even met her and utterly meaningless. Deb arrives then, thinks she left the party mess and is told just to clean it up. Nathan tries to explain and apologize to everyone who was at the party. Peyton is at least as angry at Brooke as Haley, who ruins all Nathan's tapes plus the camera and demands a list of all the girls he ever slept with. Lucas tries to calm Peyton down after she stole Brooke's dress but their row keeps escalating, and is startled his ma goes to the prom with Dan, whose infidelity-expert advice to Nathan not to make the list is ignored- so Haley tells her poor husband she only wanted him to be unable to, but now insists anyhow, even after he offered an alternative list of all the girls he loved: just her. Chase tells Brooke, who had promised their were no more nasty surprises, they are trough after the Prom. Rachel tells Mouth, who just got dumped by Shelley, the principal didn't respond to her flirting, so she's expelled -again- and will fly to her parents on holiday, even before the Prom. On the very day, Peyton tells Lucas she wants to skip the Prom entirely, but he won't take no for an answer. When apologizing Nathan reaches Peyton, she mumbles to be like him two years ago, but he assures her on the contrary she's very caring and loyal, so she should still go with Lucas. Mouth happily accepts to take Brooke. Deb thanks Haley for moving in with Nathan and assures her his mistakes are to blame on both parental bad role-models, and implores her to gracefully forgive him- she comes to her senses just in time. When Brooke finds Peyton wrote the fluorescent word "whore" on her prom dress, she's relieved 'at least she still cares'; Peyton is ready to go with Lucas, but ...
Episode 16
You Call It Madness, But I Call It Love

Lucas isn't surprised Peyton doesn't open when he calls on her to go to the prom, but ignores she is inside shivering in the hands of the false Derek, who gives her an injection. Nathan was delighted Haley's leg is out of the cask just in time for the Prom, but their car breaks down on the way; without cell phone reception, they decide to walk a mile back to a convenience store, where Deb comes pick them up. Brooke sneaks out and borrows from Mouth his grandpa's car to check on Peyton. When principal Turner denies Rachel entry, she calls out she has a limo with a loaded bar- only Mouth follows her. Peyton shivers when waking up tied down in the basement as 'Derek' photographs her and confiscates her phone in time to make Lucas wait for her at the prom; Lucas tells Glenda he appreciates her company meanwhile. Brooke uses her key and finds Peyton, but is also caught. When Derek hears the girls bitch and offers to cut Brooke open as Peyton's revenger, she asks him rather to let her cut open the shrew, caresses him, kicks and smacks Brooke till she gets the knife, plants it in his back- but fails to loosen Brooke's ties so he chases Peyton to the bedroom, where her boxing skill proves no match for him, yet when he has her positioned for rape Brooke storms in, together they beat him down, make up and join the prom. Rachel deliberately misses a flight to say goodbye dancing, then Mouth decides to go with her to New Orleans. After the disappointing prom, Nathan shows Haley his only ever New Year's resolution in the wall came true: they are back together. Lucas discovers who was in the hallway when Keith was killed. Dan feels the witness to his murder closes in.

Brooke happily with Chase, although they'll be separated after summer, and finds the courage to tell the principal about cheating at maths, yet is allowed to graduate. When Nathan asks his dad just to believe that he's innocent, Dan chokes: he can't. Lucas is convinced to attend graduation while Karen is in a stable condition at the hospital, but suddenly she has a crisis; Haley's valedictorian speech is also cut short. Coach ponders his an Nathan's options and comes up with a way out of town and out of trouble.
