Mr. Foskett, a holiday acquaintance of the Meldrews from some years ago, visits accompanied by two teenage boys whom Victor realises are not his sons only after they have all eaten a meal. Foskett was previously suicidal following his first wife's death but has now remarried. Unfortunately, he learns that his wife has left him and locks himself in the bathroom; later, wearing only a towel, he tries to jump off the roof. He's taken to the police station, where he kills himself. The return of the Meldrews' stolen car is no comfort.

Mrs Warboys comes to stay whilst her flat dries out after being flooded and her efforts to help irritate both Meldrews - especially when she turns the heating down and their wall-paper peels off. And they have to go in search of her escaped budgie. Due to an error in the local paper Victor's name has been transposed with that of the editor,who has just run a story on the local M.P.'s supposed gay affair. A vengeful television crew turn up at Victor's house to secretly film him undressing as they assume he is the editor and needs a taste of his own medicine.

Episode 3

The Meldrews have difficulty getting into the house after getting super-secure new locks fitted - locks that don't keep their fridge from being stolen. Mrs. Warboys is reported to be in hospital after an accident, but the heavily-bandaged lady the Meldrews visit turns out to be someone else. The last straw for Margaret is local greengrocer Millicent; when she suggests that she and Victor are having an affair, Margaret goes to see her with a pair of boxing gloves behind her back.

Episode 4

The Meldrews are in the waiting room at their solicitor's, where they have gone to see about a will, but everyone who comes in seems to get seen ahead of them. Victor spends his time observing the lack of cleanliness in the room, then throws a cake at a dog who is peeing on his car. He argues with its owner through the window before the man's solicitor, the same one Victor is waiting to see, presents him with a complaint from the dog's owner.

Episode 5

Pippa organizes a meal in a restaurant for Victor and Patrick, but the management assume they are a couple and have a violinist serenade them. Meanwhile, the McKendrick twins are doing the Meldrews' loft conversion; Margaret quickly gets fed up with the practical-joker one, and a neighbor bursts in shouting profane abuse at them for shoddy work and Patrick assumes that Victor is having a drugs party. This is too much for Margaret, who has just lost her job and fears that she may turn into a grumpy female version of her husband.

Episode 6

Victor gets a job as a chauffeur for wealthy Lewis Atterbury. He saves the first of his employer's cars from being wrecked in a car-wash,only for it to get turned over by some rugby players he has antagonized. He drives the second into Ronnie and Mildred's garage where,unfortunately,nobody has told him the floor had been dug out to combat subsidence. The last one almost comes a cropper due to a bee which has flown out of Victor's dental dressing and then gets flattened by a tank.
