The Meldrews return from their holiday via Luton airport where Victor's complaint about the crack in his bottom gets him searched by customs. Unfortunately their house has burnt down but six months later they get a new one on the insurance. They throw a house-warming party but people go to the wrong house twice over whilst Victor returns for a nostalgic look at the site of his old house.

The Meldrews agree to look after a tortoise belonging to Margaret's god-daughter Jennifer whilst she goes on holiday but it gets run over and thrown into a garden bonfire so they bury it and buy a replacement,hoping Jennifer won't notice. But are they really sure the first one is dead? Jennifer rewards them with tickets for a show which turn out to be for a performance in a year's time.

Margaret has taken her mother back to Kettering after she has had a trying time at the Meldrews and Victor is trying to write a sit-com but is constantly interrupted,causing him to accidentally book Margaret in to do the catering at a party thrown by local actress Desiree Gibson. Outside the house Victor argues with a litter lout and decides to teach him a lesson by emptying rubbish into his car. Inside the house he discovers he did it to the wrong person.

Margaret,working for a flower delivery service,calls at the wrong flat and takes pity on its occupant,elderly,blind Albert. She reads flyers to him,pretending they are from his relatives in Australia. Back home she finds Victor entertaining Pippa and Patrick Trench,their new neighbours but it takes her a while to place them. Victor is having trouble with a toy salesman and his ventriloquist dummy,which is losing its stuffing. Margaret learns that Albert died as an indirect result of buying mail order toys but somehow Pippa gets the impression that Victor killed him.

Episode 5

The Meldrews encounter typical problems when they go to stay with Vince and April at their seaside hotel, including a dead seagull in the toilet and a group of performing midgets who set on Victor when he takes a midge spray to the bathroom. After the attack, two Romanian girl guests are sympathetic to him and Margaret gets jealous, causing him to go out and get drunk. Not wanting to disturb Margaret, their hosts put him in their bed, but this leads the Meldrews to suspect them of trying to seduce Victor. As a result, Victor sets fire to April's wig and Vince gets pushed off the pier.

Victor and Margaret are having a sleepless night. Victor's car alarm keeps going off due to bird droppings, Margaret suggests making a hot drink but this does not help,any more than Victor's bedside reading, the autobiography of Reg Varney. The conversation takes a more serious turn as they mention their Stuart, who was presumably their child, who died young. Finally Victor is so frustrated that he considers opening Ronnie and Mildred's Christmas present from last year but things aren't that bad...yet.
