Victor Meldrew, a normal man with a normal life. He is suddenly thrown into turmoil when he loses his job after 26 years of service. Trying to relieve the monotony he decides to perform a magic show at the community centre . Things don't quite go according to plan when his car develops a problem and he is arrested for kerb-crawling.

The sort of incident that could only befall Victor, involving a mental patient and a trip to Casualty, leaves him firmly in support of the Monster Raving Loonies.

Having aroused a sleeping workman from his bed by hitting him on the head with a giant banana Victor's mood is helped even less when he finds Margaret's secret admirer has also jumped into bed expecting her to follow.
