Having decided to forgo college, Julie spends the summer searching for a job. While out job-hunting, she accidentally crashes into a sports car owned by veterinarian Dr. Paul Curran. Julie boldly persuades Paul to hire her as an assistant at his animal hospital. Her anger at a patient who doesn't love her dog impresses Paul, and despite an age difference of 25 years, the two find themselves enjoying each others company and sharing laughs. When Ann and Schneider are unable to change Julie's mind about the trip, Ann forbids her to go. Barbara and Julie debate the pros and cons of marriage to a much older man, and Julie admits that it's a step that frightens her. Later, Julie overhears Paul's impassioned speech to Ann about her daughter's qualities. Julie agrees to marry Paul, just as the phone rings. It's Ed. Debating the issue, Julie gets Ed to admit that his marriage to Ann didn't fail because of their age difference. Paul arrives for a tennis date with Julie and meets Ed, who can barely contain his hostility. Ann invites Paul to a family dinner. Later, Ann realizes that Julie will be 18 in two months, and it would be better to gain an old son than lose a young daughter. Ann is unable to convince Mrs. Walsh that Melanie is sick. Instead, Mrs. Walsh decides that it's Barbara and Cliff's fault. Schneider brings news that the police have located Melanie. Her suicide attempt was legitimate, and she may not survive. At the hospital, Mrs. Walsh continues to foist the blame on Barbara, who is consumed with guilt. Ann helps Barbara to understand that she has nothing to feel guilty about. Melanie's doctor berates the Walshes for not listening to their daughter's cry for help.
