On December 2, 1983, Kellie Jean Poppleton, age 14 from Fremont, California, was discovered dead on the side of Kilkare Road in Sunol, California. Thirty-eight years later, the case still remains unsolved. A cold case for Kellie was opened in 2004, and investigators with the Alameda County Sheriff's Office have since obtained the DNA of the male assailant, but do not have any matches in the CODIS database. Likewise, genetic genealogists have been unable to find a relative of the killer which might point toward his identity. There is the suspicion that the killer was from Korea, based upon items left at the crime scene and from an in-depth study of his DNA conducted by Parabon NanoLabs. As of 2022, the case remains open in the hopes that someday this case may be solved and bring justice to Kellie Poppleton and her remaining family members.

A Needle in the Mud

Young wife and mother Mengqi Ji Elledge, age 28, was a Chinese foreign exchange student at University of Missouri, Columbia branch. She went missing in October 2019. Her husband, Joseph Duane Elledge of Columbia, Missouri, reported her disappearance to the police. Everybody felt that it was strange that Mengqi went missing without her cell phone or her young toddler daughter. Mengqi's parents, Ke Ren and Xiaolin Ji, traveled from China to the United States to help with the investigation. The police asked the public for help and searched exhaustively for Mengqi. In March 2021, her body was found. Mud and dead vegetation from the shallow grave matched by DNA to the mud found on Joseph Elledge's boots. That is the "needle" in the mud, referenced to the name of this installment. In the end, Joseph Elledge, now age 26, was brought to trial and was found guilty of killing his wife. He was sentenced to 28 years in prison, the maximum amount allowed by law for his second-degree murder conviction.
