Episode 1

The Art Show of Ed Kienholz

43 mins

Edward Kienholz was an American artist known for his found-object assemblages and installations he referred to as tableauxs. In one of his most controversial works, The State Hospital (1966), Kienholz provided a grisly account of the filth-laden conditions he saw while working at a mental hospital during the 1940s. "I mostly think of my work as the spoor of an animal that goes through the forest and makes a thought trail, and the viewer is the hunter who comes and follows the trail," he once reflected. "At one point I as the trail-maker disappear. The viewer then is confronted with the dilemma of ideas and directions."

Brian Clarke: The Story So Far

43 mins

"Omnibus follows a packed and unpredictable year in the life of a young artist. The last 12 months have been vital ones in the career of 25-year-old painter and stained-glass artist Brian Clarke. His talents are recognized and celebrated in America, but he hasn't met with the success he deserves at home in England. Omnibus cameras record a year in which Clarke has finished a huge commission for paintings and glass in Nottingham, visited the USA where he was feted by publishers and gallery owners, and laboured long to prepare work for his first one-man exhibition in London. This show, Clarke hoped, would bring him the popular recognition in England which has so far eluded him. However, there was to be a dramatic and totally unexpected end to the year."
