Norm meets a girl at a bar and becomes involved her, only to discover she is one of Laurie's clients undergoing counseling for getting involved in relationships just to get the attention of her violent boyfriend.

Danny worries over his dad's (played by the epic Jack Warden) visit; their relationship is strained because the super-masculine father can't relate to his faltering son. Norm befriends the man and discovers that he's gay but in denial.

Norm, Laurie, and Danny resolve to start relationships; a fan of Norm loves his hockey bad-boy image; Laurie meets a Scottish guy; and Danny buys a toupee and is pursued by an attractive woman. But Laurie can't get sleep and Norm is too cute.

Norm gets drunk at a bar with a client and awakens to discover he has checked himself into rehab with the client, a recovering alcoholic. Convinced that Norm is an alcoholic, his supervisor offers him freedom from work duties.

Denby arrives as the new supervisor in the office, taking the position that Laurie hoped to get so she could make positive changes. When Denby tricks Norm into helping him force Laurie to quit, he looks for ways to get her to return.

When Denby's brings his son, Jason, to the office to learn in a working environment, things quickly go down hill when Jason divulges to Norm that he doesn't want to go to military school, but rather become a chef. After Denby finds out Norm has turned his son against him, Denby makes his life difficult unless he tells his son he has to go to military school.

Norm regrets his fling with an evil office worker Laurie hates. Meanwhile, Laurie is forced to get her driver's license after Denby agrees to her proposed program Meals on Wheels, for which she has put herself down as a back-up driver.

Norm selfishly uses an elderly abused man so he can get a positive word on his behalf to the hockey review board so he can be temporarily re-instated and allowed to to play a charity hockey so he can selfishly appear a good player after being featured as the laughing stock as the agony of defeat clip on the show Wide World of Sports.

To get back into shape for his one-time-only permitted allowance back into hockey, Norm realizes he needs help and enlists his old high school coach, Logan.
