English working-class teen Noah Powell is on holiday on the Turkish Riviera with his parents, sullen laborer Martin and insufferably loud Kathy, and sister Jenny. They enjoy the hotel, which is not up to the standard of their accompanying family: Aunt Megan McGee, businessman Uncle Steve, and their preteen son Fred. Noah says nothing of some bruises he incurred before a beach party, but afterward he gets yanked from bed in the night by the police and about to be charged with sexual abuse. Helpful hotel staff can't solve this, so they seek help from slick local attorney Rico Karvalci, who suggests all can be handled quietly but can't prevent a formal arrest and transfer to jail. Kathy's self-righteous lashing-out at everyone and attempts to find and confront possible witnesses and alleged victim make things harder on everyone.

Noah miserably awaits a trial in stages over months in a prison youth ward, keeping quiet about the sexual charge. His tourist 'victim' Milo is identified but the family refuses to talk to ever-hysterical Kathy as they return to Spain; witness Rosie and her mother volunteer a statement but also leave Turkey. Uncle Martin Powell decides to return home with his family and offers to take Jessica, who wants to resume her UK life, but Megan considers standing by her sister's family, while flirting with helpful hotel animator Ismail. Attorney Rico Karvalci arranges to buy off the confiscation of Noah's passport, but he dumps the case after hearing that Martin, tired of Kathy blaming his inaction, testified 'anonymously' to a UK journalist, which compromises a discreet way out.

Life in Turkish jail gets ever more terrifying for Noah, who is forced to join in the brutal booting of his only friend inside, a suspected gay, with the latter's secret nod of approval. The new female lawyer barely preps him for a court session, which goes badly despite a plausible plea that he and Milo just experimented but never went under the belt. Steve takes his family home, but Kathy comes along and stays with them to 'help settle' daughter Jess and bug the Foreign Office. Megan misses her Turkish lover and spies until she can prove that Steve relapsed with drugs and an affair.

When the new female lawyer refuses to use the private detective's finding that Milo's mother is a Catholic zealot who believes in 'conversion therapy', she's fired and Rico accepts Nathan's case back, now fully in charge. Hotel animator Ismail tells Megan that she can't abandon her family for him, which she only realizes after Steve takes Fred away but returns, pleading for co-parenting. Kathy gets drunk after a next failed bail hearing. Nathan is willing to plead guilty in return a maximum term of five years to avoid risking a longer one, from 18 in adult prison, and he's known as gay after Katy arranges for him to be transferred to a safer juvenile ward, which also disables future protests in case of bad treatment or request to serve his time in UK jail. At the crucial trial, Nathan surprises everyone with his full version of what happened with Milo, leading to an equally convoluted sentencing.
