Freddie and Colby break up a furrier robbery in which the driver is shot. The investigation stalls when the owner denies that a robbery took place. Meanwhile, Kevin and Frank try to clear their colleagues who are fingered as killers

At her surprise birthday party, Kevin surprises Nikki with restored sports car. They go for a spin and crash and Nikki is seriously injured. When an investigation reveals that the car may have been tampered with, Kevin is confronted with a woman from his past.

Bonnie Moreland, who has recently adopted a baby, is approached in a supermarket lot by Sandra Conrad, who claims to be baby's biological mother. When Sandra follows Bonnie home, the terrified woman locks herself inside her house until her husband gets home. When he checks the property for Sandra, he finds her dead in the backyard. The investigation leads Kevin and Frank to the lucrative adoption practice of lawyer Joseph Dominic. The case touches Christine personally, as her sister and brother-in-law had approached Dominic for an adoption years earlier.

Kevin suspects a fellow detective of assisting drug dealers after a surveillance operation is ruined.

When Grace Barnett (Carol Lynley) comes to Kirkwood and tells him she's going to kill her husband, she's barely believed. She's still given the cold shoulder when she divulges the abuse she receives at the hand of her husband. Time slowly runs out for the battered wife while simultaneously, investigations are underway to find the murderer of a sleazy pimp.

Kevin learns that the man who killed his partner and Nikkie's husband is back. So goes on a tear to find him, and he recalls his partner's final moments and his first meeting with his current partner, Frank Giambone, which took place 6 years ago.

When a promiscuous young woman is assaulted and killed, detectives Giambone and O'Brien have a variety of suspects to choose from: the victim's half-witted brother, a writer turned martial arts cult leader (David Carradine), and one of his overeager followers. But it seems that life is literally imitating literary art.

A lounge singer, Franky D. (Danny Aiello) is seen at the club where he performs arguing with his friend Vito about his gambling debts to the mob before Vito turns up dead. From then on he will be extorted for the life of his wife and children by those gangsters, who also offer him a better professional future in Las Vegas and Atlantic City.

The father of a prostitute tries to help his daughter. But she refuses. He then goes to the pimp to ask him to let her go but he also tells him no. Later the pimp is killed and the father is arrested.

A serial killer poses as an airport limousine driver and victimizes lone female tourists through carbon monoxide poisoning. Nicole starts up a relationship with Tom Kirkwood's friend Marcel.

Financially troubled businessman Milan Dvorek is found dead outside his office window and the evidence suggests suicide. When his wife arrives at the scene and insists that her husband would never take his own life, Frank has compassion for her and agrees to do whatever he can do to help. Kevin supports his partner and they begin their investigation by digging into the dead man's financial records. As the case goes on, Frank becomes more emotionally involved, which leads to a revelation about his past.

An overzealous TV reporter puts her life in danger due to her coverage of a local crime family.

Sally Koretski is a woman who has never recovered from a rape and attempted murder. Three years after the attack, she is shocked to see her attacker Jake Windsor. Sally is convinced that Windsor is responsible for a recent rape and murder and is terrified that he will come after her. Her story gains credibility when she gives police details of the crime that were not made available to the public. Standing in the way of the investigation is Thomas Penman, the administrator of an early release program called Self Start.

Former mid-South officer Bill Hecht is on assignment to the prosecutor's office to protect mobster Jerry Laws, who has agreed to testify against his boss. Bill is shot and seriously wounded in an attack at a restaurant owned by Laws' friend, who is murdered in the shooting. Laws is then passed over to Lt. Hogan's department for protection where Kevin and Frank grudgingly accept the assignment to protect Elaine's star witness.
