The workplace sitcom "NewsRadio" explores the office politics and interpersonal relationships among the staff of WNYX NewsRadio, New York's #2 news radio station. Beleaguered news director Dave Nelson (Dave Foley) tries his best to manage a staff that includes egotistical anchors Bill McNeal (Phil Hartman) and Catherine Duke (Khandi Alexander), ambitious supervising producer Lisa Miller (Maura Tierney), who also happens to be his on/off girlfriend, hapless reporter Matthew Brock (Andy Dick), sardonic secretary Beth (Vicki Lewis), and tech-happy electrician Joe (Joe Rogan), while also answering to the station's intimidating and eccentric owner Jimmy James (Stephen Root).

Dave Nelson, a guy from Wisconsin comes to New York to become the News Director at WNYX. But he goes to the wrong building so he rushes to the right one and meets the owner, Mr. James. And Dave learns that his first task is to inform the current News Director, Ed that he's being let go. Dave has a hard time doing it. And gets to know the staff, like Matthew who is very meek. Bill, one of the on air reporters who is very pompous. And Lisa, who thinks that she's going to be the next News Director.

To spite Lisa, Dave calls ex-girlfriend Nancy in Wisconsin and tells Lisa that the ex is under the impression that she and Dave are still together. The ex (Garofalo) appears in New York, but Dave can't find the nerve to tell her they are no longer together and that he has moved on. The ex threatens both Lisa and Beth to stay away from "her man."
