In World war II, spectacular special operations were set up, often mainly serving propaganda and moral rather then operational military purposes. In Nazi-occupied Czechia ('protectorate Bohemia and Moravia'), the hated SS governor was assassinated by two young flown-back-in Czechoslovak refugee soldiers who nearly messed it all up. On Nazi-occupied Crete, the commanding general was abducted by British SAS. After Hitler's Italian allies failed to defend their country, Nazi troops launched a counter-offensive and an ambitious SS agent without operational experience took charge of the evacuation of Fascist Duce Mussolini from his Alpine refuge hotel in Gran Sasso to head a puppet republic, which would soon fall and see him lynched by locals.
