In 1945 and 1946, the men of the British "War Crimes Investigation Unit" drove through northern Germany in search of Nazi criminals. One of them is Captain Anton Walter Freud, grandson of world-renowned psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud. He has returned from exile as an intelligence officer to bring war criminals to justice who are on the Allies' wanted lists. Thus Freud, with his usual perseverance, tracked down the man who had supplied the Auschwitz concentration camp with Zyklon B.

Surviving prisoners from the Neuengamme concentration camp told investigators that shortly before the end of the war, twenty children were taken out of the camp in a truck at night. Among them is the only seven-year-old Sergio de Simone from Italy. Freud finds Dr. Alfred Trzebinski and interrogates him. The doctor claims that he knows nothing about the fate of the children. But Freud knows the truth.

Freud is determined to clarify the fate of the twenty children who were abused in the Neuengamme concentration camp in bestial human experiments. After months of intensive investigations and interrogations, he is also able to find out the last incomprehensible details about the events of the last day of the children's martyrdom, whose terrible death should not be forgotten and should forever be a memorial against the breach of civilization.
