In processing a new artifact for his cyber museum, Dr. Matt Bellows releases an evil deity named Gorgos from captivity, which instantly inhabits the cyber museum and pulls Dr. Bellows in with him. Matt's family awakens to find him missing and the new artifact in pieces, with daughter Cleo discovering the cyber museum has become enhanced in some way. When son Alex reaches out to touch a life-like Greek cyber pendant, he's instantly pulled inside the cyber world to live out the "life" of Prince Theseus in the mythological story of the Minotaur.

Reluctantly, Alex re-enters cyberspace to seek his dad, this time winding up in Norse mythology as Vali, son of Loki. There he finds Loki bound to a rock by his dead other son's eviscerated entrails, with his daughter Sigyn blocking serpent venom from dripping on his face with a bowl. Whether Loki is his real dad or not, Alex can't stand by and let his suffering go on so seeks Thor's hammer, the only object that can break the bonds. As Alex sets about to free Loki, Cleo discovers that his actions have serious side-effects outside of cyber world.

For the Nez Perce Indians to survive past a battle with the Black Foot, there must be a sacrifice. Meanwhile, Cleo, feeling irritated at not having a more active role in finding her father, enters cyberspace. To her great surprise, she finds that, in inhabiting another character, she has use of her legs again. Alex, meanwhile, discovers she's not living through a classic mythology and is heading for a drowning.

While Cleo's best friend Jennie tries to support classmate David's interest in Cleo, Alex's buddy Philthy tries to get Alex to return to work at the coffee shop. Nevertheless, the siblings are soon back to exploring Greek mythology to find their missing dad, with Alex finding himself in the role of Orpheas seeking to retrieve wife Eurydice from the afterlife. Meanwhile, Lily remains a bit shaken from a visit to the city morgue.

Matt's associate Max Asher arrives with a model replica of the missing 800-gram item that was inside the shattered jade statue. Lily recognizes it from a parchment Matt bought in Tibet, and they realize it may be the little-known Gorgos Stone. Noticing Asian writing on the replica, Alex and Cleo check through the cyber museum and find a match - a Japanese hair comb that sends Alex to Japan. As Minokichi the woodsman, Alex finds a happiness he's never known and doesn't want to leave the story. Meanwhile, Cleo's mythological inquiries capture Max' interest, and before Alex knows about it, the kids have a new partner in their search for Dad.

Alex appears in Camelot as Caradoc, son of King Arthur's niece, who accepts Eliaures' beheading game and thereafter becomes a knight. In this position, and supported by Merlin, he strives to preserve Camelot by keeping Sir Lancelot and Queen Guinevere apart, preventing Arthur from discovering their love affair. It works but, to his horror, he discovers that his actions have started to change reality and his own fate.

Journeying through a remarkable cyberspace looking glass, Alex finds himself the doppelganger in a story about an Italian painter named Giocomo. Rather than let himself, as Giocomo's animated shadow, take over, Alex restores Giocomo, but upon returning home, Alex's own shadow takes on life, telling Lily what her kids have been up to in the Cyber Museum, wooing Cloe's friend Jennie, challenging a teacher's precept on a classic horror novel, and devising a very special future for Barbara.

Alex is ready to throw in the towel on their search for Dad, but not Cleo. She decides that visiting the ancient Oracle at Delphi could help, but instead of a mere visit to the oracle, she becomes the oracle, and her change in behavior (talking to Alex whom others can't see) disturbs the job security of her sanctimonious priests. Foreseeing that the priests will take her to her death means only one thing to the priests - time to get a new oracle.

Sure that they'll find Matt at the dawn of the pharaohs, Alex steps into Egyptian mythology to find himself Osiris, king of the gods. Though growingly aware of intensely jealous brother Set's plan to spring a death trap on him, Alex holds off for the last possible moment to leave, any moment expecting his father to appear. Meanwhile, back in the real world, Max, after his attack, hides his health issues from the Bellows family, and Philthy sadly believes Alex has outgrown their friendship.

With Alex/Osiris dead, Gorgos allows Matt to take form in cyberspace so he can then be accused and executed for his son's/Egypt's pharaoh's murder. Having lost her brother, Cleo enters to save her father. Together they follow the myth that might prove to be Alex' salvation. All the while, Gorgos waits for them to get to the heart of the myth where the Gorgos Stone should be. Meanwhile, Max Asher, without saying too much, tries to allay Philthy's belief that he's lost a friend and shares his secret.

Adding Max's myth-based cross-referencing program to the Cyber Museum system causes the Gorgos Stone to start obliterating myths. Going in, Alex remains himself for once and meets a god as he and the last of his mythic world are vanishing. Returning to the study, Max finds he can no longer recall this particular myth, even though it was one of his favorites. It's gone from the world for good. Jumping ahead of the stone's progress, Cloe enters Celtic mythology where she's immediately held on a charge murder.

With Alex and Philthy away on a skiing trip, Cleo - already feeling intensely sorry for herself - enters the Cyber Museum alone. There to investigate an African elephant box, she finds herself conversing with a shape-shifting snake who tells her she's part of a story. In this story (a fable on looking at life) a father dies, bestowing all his worldly goods to his son but his blessing to his daughter Radhi (Cleo). Who will ultimately be the happier for it?

As Alex, Cleo and Max discuss how to determine where next to find the Gorgos Stone, a dubious Asian visitor arrives insisting he help Max find it. As Max checks into the stranger's background, Cleo believes Mesoamerica holds promise, so Alex ventures into the legend of Quetzalcoatl and immediately finds himself the featured attraction at a human sacrifice. Quetzalcoatl intercedes just in time, and Alex finds in his savior an inspiring teacher, in turn quickly becoming his favorite and most responsive follower. Old ways die hard, however, and with drought affecting the area, Tezcatlipoca, wanting to usurp Quetzalcoatl, aims to resume the Toltec sacrifices - with Alex at the top of his hit list.
