Cathbad and Deidre tell Ivar how as young boys Ronan and Angus played with the druid's magic powders, awakening the Gray Man, a powerful spirit who, angered at his slumber being disturbed lay a curse on the castle of Kells. All of soldiers guarding the fortress are afflicted with an illness which prevents them from fighting when Maeve sends her army to attack. The situation is even worse than it appears because Ronan and Angus discover that the commander of Kells's soldiers, Torq, is a traitor.

With Angus' help, Ivar retrieves his chalice while tricking Mider into believing it still remains in Kells, but is captured while attempting to return home with his prize.
