Earl once broke a figurine of Joy and now he wants to make up for that by buying her a new one (while Joy'd rather see him buying her a hot tub). Pretty soon however, Earl learns the figurine can't be bought because it's the first prize in a mother and daughter beauty pageant. He visits Joy's former adversary and multiple winner of the prize Shelly Stoker as he hopes he can buy one of her many figurines. Unfortunately, she doesn't want to sell him a figurine, but she does promise him that if he helps her and her daughter Candy to win this year's pageant, he can have the figurine. Earl agrees. When Joy finds out about this, she decides to stop at nothing to win the contest so Earl will have to buy her a hot tub in order to be able to cross her off his list.

Stole Beer from a Golfer

Seven months ago, a golfer named Scott bought everyone at a golf canteen a drink because he hit a hole-in-one. Earl happened to be in that canteen and, to his surprise, found himself getting a free beer. As Earl himself puts it in the narration, "to some people, a free beer might not mean too much. But for a guy who just lost his last 12 dollars and is stuffin' free nuts in his pocket... it's a life saver", and with Randy, he started fixing Scott's games so he'd always win and be so happy about his golf performance he'd buy everyone at the canteen a drink. Now, Earl wants to make up for this by giving Scott back all the beer he had cost him. But giving back the beer turns out to be not even half the challenge: Scott thought he was such a good golfer that he started to spent all his time on golf, which got him fired and dumped. Earl realizes this is all his fault and decides he has to get Scott his job and girlfriend back to be able to cross him off the list. Meanwhile, Randy gets more and more agitated because he really wants to go to the annual county fair instead of helping Earl with his list.

Earl is out of the contest very quickly but Randy and Catalina can still win. While Randy and Cataline are doing their best to win the car, Earl goes to Joy to ask her what color the new bikes he'll get her two kids should be (he once ruined their brand new Christmas bikes the evening before Christmas). Unbeknown to Earl, Joy's parents are over for a Christmas visit and, even more unbeknown to Earl, Joy never told them she and Earl have divorced and that she's now married to a black guy. She therefore pretends Earl is still her husband and, because he doesn't want to ruin yet another Christmas for Joy, Earl plays along. It turns out Joy isn't the only one who keeps a secret: Her mother has one as well and Earl finds out about it.

His attempts to pay the money involve him trying to fix a hole in the road, being mistaken for a prisoner and climbing an old water tower with Randy.

Earl decides to ignore this and, with Randy, give his mother the best Mother's Day ever. However, his mother asks him to do something for his father, and because he wants to please his mother, Earl feels he has to do this. Together with Randy, he decides to get back his dad's Mustang he once lost in a race. When Earl tells his dad (whom he'd always told he'd driven the car in a lake) about his plan, his dad tells him the car was meant for him. This places Earl in an awkward predicament: He himself is now a person that needs to be crossed off his list!

When Earl wants to return a take-a-number machine to the department store he and the gang once stole it from, Randy tries to talk Earl out of giving the machine back because of the sentimental value it has to all of them. In a long flashback, we learn why the machine has the value that it has to the gang: At the end of 1999, Earl, Randy, a pregnant Joy and Donny meet Darnell, who convinces them that Y2K (the year 2000) will lead to the end of the world. So, on January first 2000 (after having mistaken the fireworks from the night before for machine gun fire), thinking they're the last people on earth, the gang goes to the department store and decides to live there. Because there are no longer any rules, Randy comes up with the idea to use the numbers of the take-a-number machine: Whenever there's a problem, the person with the lowest number is right. Meanwhile, Catalina travels to the United States. It's a long and rough journey.

When Jesse tried to understand why she had been ditched, Joy punched her in the face, and she lost two teeth. After training for six years, Jesse is back in town, and she is after Joy. Earl tries to calm her down, but without success, so he has to hide Joy in a caravan. Joy then reveals how they got married, and strikes out number 45 - "Ditched Jesse to marry Joy" - for him, saying it wasn't his fault.
