Rhoda is having problems with the on-off button on her back which is in an exposed area and knocks her out when touched. Robert makes an effort to keep Rhoda isolated in her bedroom to avoid her interactions with other people. Irene instead arranges for Rhoda to have her first dinner date with Peter, who is smitten with the gynoid since their first meeting. At an expensive restaurant, the waiter lightly touches Rhoda's back to remind her to take her purse with her. He has accidentally pressed her off button, and Rhoda falls unconscious in public. The restaurant arranges for her hospitalization and for medical exams to determine whether it has any responsibility for her health problems. Robert makes failed efforts to have Rhoda released to his custody. Rhoda listens to a female hypochondriac complaining about her lifelong problems and then imitates the woman's speech. The attending physician is convinced that Rhoda is another hypochondriac and releases her without any further medical examinations.

On the second date, Rhoda introduces herself to Mary Jo as Peter's girlfriend. Robert salvages the situation by claiming to be engaged to Rhoda. Rhoda later mentions the "engagement" to Robert's own love interest, who does not want to see Robert again. Robert is left alone with Rhoda.

If Rhoda wins, the gynoid (female android) might be sent to Europe for further contests and leave Bob's custody. Bob is one of the contest's judges, and he does everything he can to sabotage Rhoda's performance.

Dr. McDonald says that he will have to observe them all together in person, so he and Rhoda, as his secretary, spend time at their mansion.
