When one of now (best) surgery student Julia's patients dies after a seemingly successful surgery, she refuses to accept from staff that it may have been nobody's or her fault, becoming obsessed with the idea that it was murder, which an autopsy she orders doesn't contradict. Reluctant Murdoch, who concentrates on inventions for their new home, comes investigate, discovering an unusual pattern of deaths among alcoholics in the ward, they work out who poisoned half a dozen. Crabtree has a brief courtship with a suspect: nursing student, Florence Nightingale Graham, but encourages her to sell a face cream she concocted; when it seems a success, she resigns nursing school to sell it under the name Elizabeth Arden and relocates to New York City to enter the cosmetics industry full-time.

The police station gang attends Henry Higgins's rad wedding to rich Ruth Newsome, which Thomas welcomes at opportunity to replace the klutz with a more competent constable, any will do. However, the wedding is postponed after hunting rifle shot (probably using the Mimiko estate collection) hits Henry, who survives thanks to the metal case of Crabtree's wedding gift, and is nearly crushes by a deliberately loosened chandelier at the second attempt. Dr. Rupert Newsome is prime suspect, especially of a nocturnal attack wielding a sword, as he disapproves of the class difference. Wicked bride's cousin Effie Newsome blackmails Crabtree, having found his wedding speech which betrays Henry's part in the first husband's death, to 'help her' find a heirloom pearl necklace, which is already among the wedding presents, while poorer distant kin Geraldine 'Gigi' Cholmondeley jumps Crabtree's bones behind her fiance Pelham 'Plum' Kimberley's back. Cousin Dr. Rupert Newsome. William and Julia concentrate on the treasure hunt mystery and safe break-in, but the real motive is the looted family fortune.

Canada's 1906 immigration act abruptly orders the mass deportation of criminal, unemployed and/or sick migrants. Brackenreid bends the rules to help his Greek carpenter Athos Rella avoid expulsion, which blows up in his face when the man becomes the prime suspect in the murder of James McBride, the Toronto immigration officer in charge of expulsions. A subsequent series of xenophobic articles by Louise Cherry incite violence against the local Greek community, leading Murdoch to suspect that Greek immigrants are being deliberately demonized as part of a larger conspiracy, linking to manipulation of city construction contracts. Julia braves hospital brass by illegally treating Polish migrant Jakub Czarnecki, who won't survive a ship voyage back, .

Canadian secret agent Terrence Meyers swears Murdoch to utter secrecy to help solve a matter of international security: Gaetan Vidal, the French delegate to sign i Toronto the Triple Entente with Britain and Russia, meant as an alliance strong enough to deter the German empire, was murdered in his hotel room, where a coded letter was stolen, probably by a conference participant. His attache and lover Régine Rivière, Terrence's even feistier ex, coaches and accompanies William, who impersonates him, aware of the dangers. Brackenreid is at the hotel, to welcome his old army buddy Montague 'Monty' Ainsworth, but Thomas's snob wife Margareth insisted to come along and nearly gives the game away hysterically. Only Julia was taken in confidence, to perform the autopsy, but gets semi-jealous of Régine. Murdoch dodges dangers -including a murderous German spy on hotel staff- and sets traps to test each delegation and sign as Vidal, to safeguard this shot at world peace. Meanwhile George's stay-cation is tainted by chores by cheered up by helping cutie Eric search for his 'stolen' toy car.

William and Julia take a scientific interest in a phenomenal occurrence of meteorites around Toronto, while the the cops worry about strange reports and even weirder absence of reported mischief of crime. Crabtree assists Murdoch examining a caldera (impact crate in a barn) were arthropods emerge. Crabtree worries ever more as both strangers and people he knows start behaving strange, absentminded, distant, obsessed with some strange plants with edible leaves and alleged orange pekoe tea. Crabtree sadly finds increasing evidence from his spontaneous alien theory, observing affected people congregating and communicating in a click and finger snapping code. Yet despite discovering alcohol acts as antidote and tricking a few into a cell, he's no match for the Murdochs, after Julia shot William only to be infected as he rose.

Crabtree and John find an adult male corpse, which turns out Nigel Baker, the sadistic criminal who tortured and murdered detective Llewellyn Watts' adoptive brother, Danny. Baker was recently exonerated and released from prison due to a forensic error with crucial evidence. Watts was believed to have killed him because of evidence tampering that was crucial to Baker's conviction. Despite claiming self-defense, discrepancies in Watts' statement lead Murdoch to suspect that Watts took justice into his own hands and murdered the man in revenge for his brother's death. A second brother was revealed to be involved. Crabtree tires of Higgins being absent(minded) all the time, hence even more useless then ever, having taken a second job as night watchman. So Crabtree suggest that he should advertise as a car taxi. Crabtree finds that rather shifts the problem, as rides are often during precinct shifts, but finding Higgins surprisingly competent at car repairs, hires him as a trainee mechanic at his automobile repair shop.

Murdoch, Crabtree, Watts, John and Julia investigates the apparent double suicide of the self-made carpet millionaires couple Westerbrook, who drowned in their own swimming pool, but only as the paralyzing effect of a biological poison administered in their food with grinded glass. Their mansion was also robbed, a maid is arrested trying to pawn the silverware, handed by professional thief Anthony Pottier. The extreme snobs were just receiving the duke and duchess of of Somerset, Richard and Elizabeth Seymour, whose son Albert, Earl of Lincoln, finally admitted the family to the peerage by marrying their firstborn daughter Diana Seymour, who is very protective of her sister Persephone, also being 'finished' rigorously in a secluded study for another arranged marriage. Snobbism however works two ways, yielding aristocratic suspects and alas a second victim, when Albert is fatally pushed down his hotel suite window. Crabtree ponders whether to pay to avoid being sued by 'nearly attorney' Effie Newsome over a faulty repair job by Higgins which has caused an accident, but they also mistrust the alleged victim.

Brackenreid is missing from the station, so worried Crabtree wants to go search for him, but Murdoch forbids it, feeling Sir doesn't want to be found. John however takes time off to track down his father, who responded to a cry for help from an ex from before his marriage, Sarah Johnston in small town St. Marys, whose daughter Nomi is missing and only now revealed to be biologically Thomas's. After initial refusal to believe it and stating it's the local police jurisdiction, he picks up the trail of the secretarial school student who declined escort work in favor of laundry chores, yet was also 'approached' in that job by a wealthy doctor. Thomas is beaten up, which only stirs his tenacity, and after John finds him, Sarah's home is hit by a fire projectile. Father and ever-loyal son team up to save the half-blood bastard, but back home Margaret Brackenreid can't cope with his 'hidden past'.

Murdoch and Crabtree courteously help very loud, aggressive Neapolitan detective Flavio Pupazzi look for a Pompeian treasures of stolen Roman antiquities brought to Canada by ship, but the suspect is found murdered, and the real plot of multiple deceit proves dangerous to the whole police team. Inspector Thomas Brackenreid considers his marriage a lost cause and firstborn expects John to step up as new family head, looking after his kid brother. Henry Higgins begs Julia to help hide from his ex-socialite wife he got injured not as police hero but clumsy second job mechanic, but nursing him inspires Ruth Higgins-Newsome to try it as her job, proving a technical disaster with a refreshingly comforting bedside manner.

Unlike Crabtree, John shows an interest in and even some sympathy for Annabella Maloney, who they must transport to prison on death row, convicted for her foster mother's ax murder. However she escapes to her home town, having sworn in court bloody revenge on all involved in her case, and the local GP is ax-murdered. Crabtree asks Watts to come discretely, hoping Murdoch and especially Brackenreid senior never find out. He comes with the attorney, who brings a potential victims list and the court file. They find Annabella held secrets against all of them, the foster mother was utterly abusive, and the defense failed to find an alibi by establishing the time of death. Annabella is shot-wounded by a local, but caught again and the murdered trapped.

A knave's badly beaten corpse is identified as Wesley, one of the more rebellious boys from the Catholic orphanage Detective Llewellyn Watts was raised in, now run by Jesuit Duvalier, who wielded the cane when William was a Nova Scotia state ward. Deputy director Hornby helps both detectives question everyone, especially now worst rascal Paul Smith, who bonds with laborer Hiram at the brick factory where boys 'learn the trade', and shy nerd Felix, who was Wesley's protege. William locks up Duvalier, who caned even him, but never gave more the 'six of the best', unlike the killer. Meanwhile clueless nurse Ruth Higgins-Newsome, revealed a romance novelist, helps Julia set up a writer's den in hospital.

An old man perished in a boarding house fire proves none other then William's elusive father, who actually lived in Toronto, even was well-off, and had bourgeois friends, like the Darling couple. It was arson, so possibly murder. He didn't live there, but at his boarding house has hidden a crucial loot, pointing the team to the old crime at the heart of the actual murder. William sets a trap.

The Murdochs attend a demonstration of a new electric typewriter by way of contest, which Crabtree and obnoxious reporter Louise Cherry enter. Another male contestant is electrocuted during the typing, but Murdoch soon suspects that he wasn't the intended target, rather Louise, as the order of appearance was changed and examination of the machine shows it was sabotaged in a way that it would only be triggered by a very high typing speed. William also considers the inventor might be the indirect target, but also Louise, whose blunt articles made lots of enemies in the public, wile stirring mixed feelings among the newspaper staff, as she boosts circulation at the expense of quality.

District crown prosecutor Allen Templeton promises Murdoch a promotion to Inspector, unprecedented as Catholic, if he and Brackenreid are cooperative. Thomas thus agrees to stay out of Inspector Horace McWorthy's sloppy investigation. Watts however pursues the murder case, involving John, who gets dangerously shot when they go question hidden suspect, who is found fatally shot with John's service weapon. Julia performed urgent surgery on John's spine, but fears this may leave him cripple for life. A link between the first victim and his girlfriend Isabel Carmichael contributes to him becoming the improbable, yet sole prime suspect after Violet Hart, who lacked experience to succeed Julia as coroner, accepted to falsify evidence -a fragment of the bullet- for the promotion.

Episode 18

Thinking fellow Inspector McWorthy is behind the staging of John as murderer, Thomas heads there armed, only ti find him already murdered. Murdoch must connect the dots, despite more evidence tampering, between ever more suspects, starring party animal Arthur Carmichael, son of the chief prosecutor, but also William's own career benefactor Templeton, and promoted Violet. Thomas blames Julia as John seems crippled for life, but Dr. Dixon brilliantly makes her perform the redeeming surgery which saves him after sepsis complication. The apparent spider in the web commits suicide leaving a written confession, which has crucial holes. John decides to leave .the police to pursue an acting career, despite more then bitter disappointment in his inspiring lover Isabel Carmichael.
