Murdoch has been wrongfully imprisoned for the murder of a burlesque dancer found is his bed, Julia has been kidnapped, Brackenreid is missing, Constables Jackson and Crabtree have ostensibly been killed and Station House Four has fallen under the thumb of corrupt city councilor Franklin Williams, whom the council president manipulates after reinstating Davis as Chief Constable and appointing civilian Penelope Marsh to manage station four, where all officers are suspended with pay, only recording cases to be referred to other stations, the informal task being to get Murdoch convicted. First from jail, then released on house arrest after promising to confess once he's certain Julia will be all right, Murdoch and his remaining allies, falsely assumed dead or fled, work underground as to set things right gathering proof against the real criminals, with a surprising turncoat ally.

Wealthy entrepreneur and wine connoisseur Ricardo Firenzo is poisoned at his only son Enrico's wedding by fatal poison in an Italian bottle he kept aside for a special occasion, forty years old, so the victim seems a victim of chance. Detective Watts enjoys introducing the teetotal Murdoch to the world of wine tasting, snooty experts proving rather useful; they get as tipsy on 'evidence' as Brackenreid and Crabtree, who searches tirelessly to find the label doesn't refer to any existing estate, but to Ricardo's own, started with his brother Paolo. Firenzo threatened, under his pseudonym, to expose a fraud within the burgeoning Canadian wine-making industry. His underpaid butler Raymond Hatch sneakily helped himself to pay supplement in kind. Rebecca James feels racially discriminated while applying for a job in Toronto and accepts to move back home to run a rural practice.

William and Julia attend a benefit dinner, held in their own home hotel, for the blind in honor of 'model patient' Helen Keller, but due to it being held in the dark are useless as 'witnesses' of the stabbing murder of a guest. Politely restraining the uninvited help of the hotel detective, Murdock brings in his team to work on the main evidence: a secretly made sound recording by fellow guest Alexander Graham Bell. While constable Higgings wrestles with mixed feelings about a wealthy guest who has a crush on him, Crabtree looks for possible motives among the guests, and Murdoch painstakingly works to reconstruct how the murder was committed 'blindly'.

The Canadian Patient

Inspector Thomas Brackenreid is delighted his son John became police cadet, but wife Margaret feels their heir has far greater potential and makes him promise to 'have a word', resulting in excessive hazing, despite Crabtree's attempt to act as mentor, which the knave all accepts with angelic patience. Julia is fascinated by various stands at the Toronto medical exhibition, where she recruits potential medical scholarship candidate Violet Hart as forensic assistant. William attends with her public experimental surgery performed by Dr. Bertram Lennox, who announced the first human kidney transplant. After his already terminal patient dies under his hands, he demands Murdoch finds the alleged saboteur, having noticed removed anesthetic. After the compatible blood test aspirin was injected to induce temporary hemophilia. Suspicions concern the movement of 'Christian Scientists', who oppose invasive medicine, a rival surgeon who fears failed human transplant will only set the research back years and Lennox's own ruthless past. Yet the only party to benefit is the next terminal kidney patient who now gets his long shot.

Dr. Osler Regrets

William and Julia enjoy dining with her former mentor on international lecturing tour about aging, professor Dr. William Osler, who dismisses the media storm taking literally his jest 'men over 60 should be euthanized'. It seems to inspire several murders by chloroform, staged a suicides. Constables Johnny and Henry Higgins are amused to see the inspector joining them on patrol in a desperate effort to demonstrate still being fit. Crabtree assists Murdoch looking into victims, heirs and other possible motives, like a father-son conflict over modernizing their business, an ousted former partner turned bitter rival, a senior law firm partner in the way of two juniors. Crabtree also clashes with his traitorous ex Louise Cherry, whose bad journalism now flirts with regular crime, landing her in a cell, yet dismissal proves an undeserved blessing. After a tragic confession, a thus fake-shown alibi betrays the 'serial killer', who also murdered twice as cruel diversion.

Harish Bannerjee, the British Raj (colonial Indian) envoy to Canada, reports his sons Vik and Sunil missing from Toronto's most exclusive private boarding school. As none of their classmates seems prepared to talk, nor real friends, Murdoch convinces the inspector to allow youngest constable John Brackenreid to volunteer as undercover student, while Crabtree -also under alias- gets to replace the former English teacher, and fail to inspire the class about his own 'literary masterpiece' set in Ancient Egypt. Both do excellently, creative and employing Murdoch)techniques like blue light to detect blood. They work out about the 'student casino', brothers' hide-out and actual murder of an adult, which proves the key to the school's dark secret. Meanwhile Julia eagerly follows the hormone research on (in)fertile rabbit.

The Accident

Constable John Brackenreid is directing mainly horse-drawn traffic in Toronto, when Mr. Flannery's motorcar colliding, after evading a pram, with elderly civil servant Dilton Dilbert's horse-drawn carriage leaves the latter firmly pinned between both locked vehicles. Julia's medical investigation suggests that any attempt to free him will result in his fatal bleeding, so Brackenreid comforts the dying Dilbert while team Murdoch braves the tram driver demanding passage, and detective Watts uses his best German to calm down a mouthy, injured German tourist and passing-by impertinent reporter Louise Cherry needs repeated restraining. Evidence that the car was sabotaged and some damage controlled leads Murdoch to suspect that the crash was no but staged, so he, Crabtree, John and Llewellyn Watts gradually uncover the nasty truth about a deceptive, vindictive plot.

Brackenreid Boudoir

William lets Julia drag him to try camping by a lake, but they stumble upon a corpse. It's Graham Caswell, whose absence was barely missed and death arouses no emotions among his fellow members of an amateur painters club, who were envious of his talent. To explore their rivalries, Brackenreid joins and seems to match their modest level, even better according to Lady Belinda Carlye, who offers him to coveted patronage previously enjoyed by the victim, until he 'grew a backbone'. Thomas needs his to stand her arrogance and brave his wife Margaret's indignation at the nude portrait (black?) widow Belinda demands, although other women rival to pose to her anger. Yet one other painter's varying talents prove relevant.

The Talking Dead

When the corpse Murdoch investigates doesn't prove the missing person Watts was looking for, it becomes soon clear that half of the obituaries in a Toronto paper are 'lethal pranks', announcing deaths that haven't (yet?) occurred, mainly staged as accidents. The while precinct goes investigate who is really dead, if their are links and invite the survivors to the station for their own protection. Watts comes on the list and grudgingly accepts safe 'inner duty', but all the others become prime suspects themselves after nun Annamaria dies from poison tea John personally made for her. The case seemed cracked with confession as everything ties up around a bloody bank robbery, but Murdoch and Crabtree lust rush to prevent another murder.

F.L.A.S.H.!

Millionaire inventor James Pendrick returns to Toronto, staging a demonstration to recruit investors -including Thomas- for his newest invention, an under sea high-speed vac-train 'FLASH'. Just then, one of Pendrick's trusted key project collaborators is killed, Murdoch suspects that he may have been a spy engaging in industrial espionage for Trenton Darling's challenged steamship industry lobby. Crabtree is in Paris with his beloved on dream assignment to the Moulin Rouge, Thomas and Higgins can't lend such fine assistance and Pendrick drags only William along in the now dangerous experimental vacuum, where more crime broods as everyone with access becomes a suspect.

Just when cricket-ignorant Murdoch and Julia come watch a match where rich-married constable Henry Higgins (who now even has a manservant) finally is on the rich men team in the annual duel against professional players, a pro is killed by the explosion when his bat hits a ball thrown by the arrogant Serbian count of royal blood in exile Dagan Petrovic An equally killed squirrel show not the ball but the bat contained an explosive, and the bat had been switched, so the victim probably accidental. Murdoch is somewhat distracted as Julia confided finally expecting his baby, but manages even without Crabtree to research both teams, finding secret and motives, revolving around the count's countless lies topping the others mostly white lies, yet yielding a surprising prime suspect who nearly strikes again.

While Catholic bishop Gorey says a pontifical mass in father Father Jennings's church, an alabaster statue of the Virgin, anonymously donated the previous day, 'weeps' what Murdoch duly suspects to be human blood. Detective Llewellyn Watts would like to believe in a miracle, but dares brave the episcopal refusal to let laymen 'intervene with a case for specialists from Rome'. Father Jennings's maid Josephine Beattie claims it's crying to denounce her a 'murderer', albeit merely missing her mother's deathbed late for medicine once years ago. Yet she jumps top her death from the tower, a macabre sight sabotaging Henry's proposal for Ruth Newsome's hand. Team Murdoch digs in people's past and the churchyard flower bed, digging up a secretly buried baby corpse, crucial to the tragic case.

Crabtree fears for his life when it emerges that both he and Margaret Brackenreid have also eaten the suspect meat, the team looks into other contestants, including French chef and favorite Henri Prideaux.

That changes when when Canadian dodge spy Terrence Meyers enlists Murdoch's help in solving a seemingly unrelated locked room murder as Murdoch soon uncovers a bizarre plot to assassinate the American president, which seems to be spearheaded by a legendary Spanish assassin, El Noche. The plot thickens as both William, who went to rescue Theodore with Terrence, and Crabtree and Brackenreid discover further corpses, worrying lies and secrets, setting the scene for a scary nocturnal wilderness shoot-out finale.

After helping disband Horace Barney's stone-throwing anti-Jewish thugs demonstration against the plans for a Yiddish vaudeville in Toronto, John and Higgins get tickets for the fundraiser show starring the comical brothers Al and Harry Jolson. John only has eyes for foxy singer Charlotte Hanson, despite her vocal inadequacy, until theatre owner Abraham 'Abe' Michaelson collapses on stage, fatally stabbed. John gets occasion to propose a date to Charlotte, who mourns the adulterous victim as mistress, the fresh widow reportedly still in Latvia where the Yiddish band immigrated from. Higgins find a trail to Abe and Barney's shady dealings, the Yiddish director Saul Levine lied about stolen cash receipts. During the investigation, quasi-orphan Watts learns his late mother probably was Jewish and embraces that presumed heritage, useful to get a crucial clue.

They are however pulled back into work when former morgue assistant Rebecca James's partner Nate Desmond is accused of the murder of a man he was seen fighting with and seeks William's help, only to arrested in his hotel room by investigating inspector Horace McWorthy, who considers Murdoch biased, while his precinct is presumed corrupt by Brackenreid. So William, Crabtree and Watts conduct their own parallel investigation 'a décharge', only the evidence seems to stack up against Nate, who is caught at lie after lie. At the root of the case is an illegal abortion involving Rebecca, salt in the Murdoch couple's wound.

Free Falling

Believing his relationship with Julia -whom Thomas convinces not to burn bridges- irreparably damaged after her miscarriage, Murdoch avoids facing his issues by skipping work and helping barfly Beckett track down his estranged wife Annie, leaving Watts to investigate -and coach John on the job- the discovery of a limbless torso, followed by more severed body parts. Violet Hart colludes with inspector Horace McWorthy to oust Julia from her job, claiming the miscarriage has left her unable to perform her duties. Crabtree is forced to accept that he and Nina want different things from life when she accepts a job in Paris, not his counter-proposal to marry, so the two split up. A heart-to-heart with the newly single Crabtree leads Murdoch to make amends with Julia after getting in physical danger, finding without a partner the missing wife, nurse Annie, and why she staged her death.
