But that doesn't stop him from actively investigating from his hospital room. The inspectors learn there was an argument between Piontek and painter Künstler Bitomsky, because Piontek refused to include Bitomsky in an exhibition due to his assistant Anemone Andersson's disapproval of Bitomsky's painting quality. There's another lead: particles of turquoise paint are found under the dead's fingernail. This directs the investigation to the painting "Study in Turquoise," which was sold through art dealer Ferdinand Frayn after Piontek's verification of authenticity. Meanwhile, Andersson is seriously injured in attempted murder. It comes out that Piontek, Frayn, and Bitomsky were art fraudsters. Piontek endorsed paintings, Bitomsky forged, and Frayn sold the forgery to his protégés. Bitomsky was supposed to be included in the exhibition as payment.
