Cowboy Killer

Mon, Dec 26, 2022

The summer of 2001, Lori Jones, age 44, wasn't the only state of Washington woman to disappear after being last seen with the man known in bars around these parts as "Cowboy Mike" for his western duds and penchant for serenading ladies with his guitar. In the end, he was caught with the help of both Oregon and Idaho police officers. "Cowboy Mike" was a nickname for Michael John Braae who was born in 1960. He was a serial rapist and a serial killer. Victims he left in his wake were Lori Jones, age 44; Susan Ault, age 39; Velina Larson, age 37; Debra Van Luven, age 45; and possibly more unknown victims. Braae was arrested in Idaho in 2001 after leading police officers on a 40-mile car chase, which ended when authorities deployed a "spike strip" which deflated at least one of Braae's tires. He stopped his vehicle on the road and jumped over the railing of a 40-foot-high bridge into the Snake River. An Idaho sheriff's deputy, Sgt. Paul Maund, described that Braae was picked up by an Oregon State Police boat after trying to drown his police dog named Bosco who was sent on a leash into the water to catch Braae. The well-trained dog was able to come to the surface and promptly latched onto Braae's shoulder, which promptly brought the chase to an end. Braae's trial began in 2008 and he was found guilty and convicted of the murder of Lori Jones. He was sentenced to almost 48 years in prison.

Episode 6

No Honor Among Thieves

Mon, Jan 9, 2023

Pocahontas, Arkansas, 2013: A prairie town Sheriff in Pocahontas, Arkansas uncovers a drug ring that includes its most powerful law enforcement officials, such as former attorney and judge, Bob Sam Castleman and others. In the underbelly of Pocahontas, there was a rampant methamphetamine trade. One person involved in the meth trade was Travis Perkins, who "cooked" the meth. Travis allegedly supplied the meth to Bob Castelman, age 63, and Bob's son Robert Jerrod Castleman, age 30, for further distribution. To help bring the drug trade down, the Sheriff calls in the FBI for help. Three days before the trial was to begin, where Travis Perkins was going to testify to his crimes, and rat out the people he supplies the meth to, he is murdered in his apartment. It was thought by some town members that the murder was carried out by Bob Castleman, but the authorities were unable to develop any direct evidence against him. Bob's son, Jerrod Castleman, takes a plea bargain and implicates his father in the drug trade. It was rumored that Bob Castleman took the fall because he wanted to protect his son from prison time. In the end, Bob Castleman is convicted of conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine and is sentenced to 40 years in prison. Nobody was ever charged with the murder of Travis Perkins. Individuals who appeared on this installment were FBI Special Agent Ed Jernigan; Arkansas State Attorney Anne Gardner; local resident Rebecca Spray and others.
