Examining magistrate Antoine Verlaque must a cancel a getaway with his wife to investigate the poison murder at Montpellier university the murder of an art history professor who just hosted a retirement party in his luxurious departmental apartment, only to announce he wasn't resigning early. That makes his potential successors suspects, and his assistant, plus the students who hoped those to help them to a prestigious research scholarship. Antoine's wife, literature professor Marine Bonnet, and insufferable mother in law Florence, both have links to some. The assistant dies in a most suspicious hit and run, and there are dirty dealings with both works of art, some falsified, and college funds.

Judge Antoine Verlaque investigates the fatal fall, actually pushed from a balcony, of count Étienne de Bremont, a childhood friend of him and his wife Hélène Paulik, with whom the played at his very chateau. He was discovered by its caretaker, Jean-Claude Faraud, who inhabits the concierge's cottage and apparently hid having searched for documents concerning their families, as he's actually the count's bastard half-brother. Etienne's legal brother Lucien goes from co- to sole owner of the castle, which he wants to convert into a hotel, except now jean-Claude could claim a share, and he drowns in the castle pond. Isabelle de Bremont also had a affair with her brother in law, and hides her whereabouts in the fatal night helped by lawyer sister Béatrice de Keppel Valois, while phone records point to Jean-Claude's ambitious sister Cosette.

Together, they investigate the murders, mysteries, and dark underbelly of their idyllic home in the south of France.
