Episode 1

The Suspect

Having met on an online dating site, Karl and Cassandra are on their first date, there, despite her words to the contrary, being a seeming mutual attraction stemming from an underlying awkwardness. Karl returns to work from that lunch date to be enmeshed in a murder case, eighty-five year old local Carlyle Burke's dead body, his head having bled out from blunt force trauma, which was discovered in his home by "friend" George Wilcox. There are a few initial suspects, including young Riley Erlandson who runs whenever the investigators are near, and the unknown black man in the rainbow painted van who supposedly sold Carlyle the fresh trout in his kitchen. But in doing due diligence with such people, Karl, after discovering the true nature of said person's relationship with Carlyle beyond a pure acquaintanceship, becomes convinced that the murderer is George himself, he who does not hide anything about his feelings for Carlyle except saying that he actually killed him. While Karl and Cassandra try to find time within this murder investigation to see where their relationship is headed, the investigation itself may affect what happens between them in George not only being a frequent patron of the library, but Cassandra's friend.

Episode 2

Fall from Grace

Gibsons High School will be celebrating its 50th anniversary with a reunion dance, the event for which alumnus Cassandra is on the organizing committee and for which there is an expectation of many other alumni returning to town for it. While Isabella is eagerly but timidly anticipating the return of her unrequited high school crush, that timidity which leads to an offer of a wingperson, Cassandra reluctantly asks Karl to be her date, that reluctance as it means taking their relationship public and means that she will be known as the girlfriend of the police chief. In the lead up to the event, the murdered dead body of someone who would have attended the reunion is discovered underneath the pier. While the victim was known to have at least one enemy who becomes a suspect, the victim's past leads to the thought that his murder may have something to do with his business dealings and/or drugs. While a relationship goes sour in the lead up to the murder, what actually happened with the murder may factor into the outcome of that relationship. And this murder investigation coinciding with the reunion will show Cassandra what is means holistically to be the police chief's girlfriend.

Episode 3

A Chill Rain

Karl and Cassandra are taking a break from each other as both have visitors from out of town. Karl's is his daughter Holly whose unexpected arrival is due to needing refuge from her boyfriend with who she had just broken up. Cassandra's is a high school boyfriend of sorts, successful Hollywood actor Roger Galbraith who expects to take things further with her now than then. Karl will be preoccupied with work when a general stalking case of sorts takes on new dimensions. The stalkee is wealthy resident Zoe Strachan, somewhat of a loner in seemingly not really liking people, she having a passive/aggressive manner with most. The stalker is her estranged brother Benjamin Strachan, who just returned to town. The report she files with the police is that he, a scammer, came to her for money in he owing criminals $100,000, non-payment which could lead to violence not only to him but to her in she being family. While Edwina and Andy investigate the nature of the Strachans, and despite Benjamin not approaching Zoe again do discover the validity of the story with said criminals possibly on the Sunshine Coast to collect or exact their threatened violence, Karl and his team may discover that there is a greater threat in this case.

Prized Possessions

At a fundraiser for her arts center, Cassandra reunites with a childhood friend who later discovers that her husband has gone missing and that a crime scene has unfolded in her home. Cassandra shares clues with Alberg as he investigates the mysterious disappearance, unveiling secrets and the truth behind a marriage.

Episode 5

A Touch of Panic

An official complaint is made against Kendrick by someone who he pulled over in a routine traffic stop, Kendrick who believes he did nothing wrong in being his friendly self toward the complainant. Karl assigns Edwina, as Kendrick's direct superior, to investigate the complaint. Meanwhile, there is an underlying tension between Cassandra and Holly, the issue being that each believes the other doesn't like her. Each may have a larger problem as Holly's new friend Devon has noticed a car with an unseen driver following them, something that Holly is eventually forced into telling her father. And Cassandra meets a contractor named Gordon Murphy who is interested in being involved in the library expansion. As she discusses the project with him, she begins to get an uneasy feeling about him. There is an obvious common factor between what Holly and Cassandra are going through, namely Karl.

The Madness Method

A murderer is on the loose and is headed towards Gibsons. In a race for time, the suspect's psychiatrist notifies Alberg of the potential threat after receiving a haunting text message. Alberg launches an investigation that takes an unexpected turn.

Family Concerns

Karl and his team have to deal with two murders in quick succession, the two obvious common factors between them being that both victims are female, and both bodies were found exposed in easily accessible locations in the woods. Karl has to remind the team to follow the evidence in that there is rampant speculation on social media which by word of mouth makes some of it seem like fact. While the first victim is a Jane Doe, the second is a local businessperson, the former owner of the just sold property where Coopers Gym is housed, it which is thus being probably evicted and where Edwina and Isabella work out. Karl is treating both cases separately, which in the former means identifying the victim. With an unsatisfactory rendering by the in-house artist, Karl asks Cassandra for her recommendation of a local portrait artist who could do a rendering of the victim for public release. Who she recommends is Tommy Cummins, who is having an exhibition at the art gallery and who is Holly and Devon's high school art teacher. Devon seems to have a crush on him, with Tommy's actions toward Devon deemed inappropriate at least least by her jealous now ex-boyfriend, Jesse. And Karl is otherwise out of mind for Cassandra as she is focused on the town council vote on funding for the new art center, and providing practical support for Roger, in town to deal with family matters, he who is still not too preoccupied with those to hit on her yet again.

Episode 8

Sleep While I Sing

With Tommy's help as the sketch artist, the sketch itself which Karl releases for public consumption, Karl and his team receive a credible call as to the identity of the Jane Doe. While there are still other suspects such as known sex offenders residing in the area, Karl ties the victim personally to only one known person on the Sunshine Coast. He and Edwina individually notice something different among the evidence that may prove invaluable to solving the case, but perhaps not before the perpetrator strikes again, as they are certain he/she is a serial killer. Meanwhile, Cassandra is increasingly worried about Roger whose behavior is becoming more not like the friend she has known since high school. And the success of his exhibit leads to Devon drawing closer to Tommy. The problems in their relationship outside of anything beyond teacher/student is only exacerbated by Jesse's continual taunts to him.
