Pilot

It's first day of the Los Angeles mayoralty for retired businessman Neil, the former "billboard king", who was elected in the special election almost as no one else wanted the job, he who ran for a personal reason having nothing to do with serving the people. Feeling like he will be a joke of a mayor, Mikaela, now Chief of Staff, regrets using her skills in the "experiment" of running his campaign and is thinking about quitting now that he's elected, while Tommy, Chief Strategist, is a little more optimistic about his future working in this administration. Both, however, see seemingly naive Jayden, interim Communications Director, as a possible scapegoat for any trouble the administration may face. Neil's first off-the-cuff policy decision announcement at his first news conference doesn't sit well with Orly in her run for Sophomore Class President, their relationship long having been strained, while they having to move into the official mayor's residence not helping that relationship. The policy also doesn't sit well with thirty-year council member Arpi, who most would have thought would have embraced this "left wing" announcement despite she and Neil being polar opposites, including in their social and political leanings. Reverting back to the reason he ran may give Neil the perspective he needs in bridging the chasm between him and Orly if just a little at this time, while he has to find and push the right buttons to placate Arpi not only on this issue but in his administration for the long haul.

Mayor's Day Out

Tommy has scheduled a day-full of photo ops and glad handing for Neil, on which Tommy and Jayden will accompany him. Neil isn't looking forward to the day, feeling like he should be dealing with more pressing civic issues. Tommy and Jayden's few rules for Neil not to appear un-mayoral seem to go out the window quickly, with Neil's changing mood affected by their first stop. Meanwhile, Neil has left Mikaela in charge at city hall, with her one and only task being to watch over Arpi. Indeed, Arpi does come looking for Neil in wanting to push the pet project which she has been trying to advance for months: Private Plane Paths Over Residential Neighborhoods, or PPPORN. In Mikaela keeping Arpi preoccupied with another task, Arpi shows Mikaela the important means to get things done at city hall in they going on a search for something as simple as scotch tape, none which can be found in the supply room. But what Arpi ends up showing Mikaela isn't quite what it appears on the surface.

Brentwood Trash

After a less than successful casual meet and greet aboard a Metro LA bus, Neil still feels the need to take the lead on a Town Hall in Brentwood regarding a recycling center proposed for the neighborhood, Arpi who was scheduled to lead the session. While it is supported by City Hall, it is largely opposed by the neighborhood's wealthy residents who don't want "trash" marring their pristine neighborhood. While Neil believes he can handle it in Brentwood residents being his "people" and Arpi being too confrontational especially in her views on the rich, most specifically entitled celebrities with too much free time on their hands, Arpi fears he will cave under pressure. Only at the Town Hall will they discover who if either is right. With almost everyone noticing that his speeches for Neil are all the same with only the names changed, Jayden is tasked with hiring a speech writer, something to which he is not looking forward in not being the type able to manage anyone else let alone himself. In the process, he is torn between two candidates: the obviously most qualified one versus his soul mate, especially as Neil's directive was to hire someone who made Jayden's life easier. And Orly makes an unexpected trip to City Hall while her father is at the Brentwood Town Hall. Mikaela, who takes on the pseudo adult figure role in Neil's absence, learns that Orly has skipped a school event in protest to what she sees as the unfair official/unofficial rules of high school life. In trying to console Orly, Mikaela comes to a realization about her own life and life of adults in general.
Episode 4
The Sac

Neil is called to a meeting with Ms. Adams, Orly's principal, which brings up the issue of any actions by Orly potentially affecting Neil's standing as mayor. In Neil needing to cut such things off before they come to public light, Tommy is able to convince him to stalk Orly on Instagram using a fake account, this move much against what Mikaela believes is right for many reasons. Meanwhile, Arpi is excited to be meeting with the Governor to discuss another of her pet projects supported by Neil, namely the end to oil drilling in the city. Jayden is less excited in being her chauffeur, the twelve hour round trip to and from Sacramento which will confine him with someone who basically scares him. Their time together is not only affected by Jayden taking Neil's advice about a way to get to know her better, but two things that come to light about Arpi, one specifically about the meeting itself, the other about one of her life phobias.
Episode 5
Dodger Day

Neil is asked to throw the opening pitch at a Dodgers game, something he really wants to do for personal reasons, but something his key staff members plus Arpi advise him against doing in seeing no up side but a lot of potential down sides. His ability to do so is not only threatened by the reason he wanted to do it and by the city's recent safety initiative, but may also affect Jayden's flirtation with the Dodgers' PR person, Emily. Meanwhile, Tommy is attracted to Nestor, city hall's security guard at the metal detector screening, he who doesn't even seem to notice Tommy in only checking his ID and telling him to move on despite what Tommy believes is his witty repartee. Mikaela believes Tommy's problem is the less than attractive photo on his official ID badge. Tommy is unable to get his photo retaken under the strict "no retakes" policy of thirty year ID photographer, Daniella. Pushing the right buttons, Tommy is able to enlist Mikaela's help to get said photo retaken, bypassing hard nosed Daniella which may not be the easiest thing to achieve even with that help.
Episode 6
Respect in the Workplace

City hall staff is scheduled to attend a mandatory respect in the workplace seminar, which for Mikaela, Tommy and Jayden potentially conflicts with the best day of the month - food truck day - the only time there is good food within spitting distance of city hall. Mikaela and Tommy feel that despite a test at the end, they can make it in and out of the seminar in quick order by staying quiet during the presentation, the test itself which should be a breeze. Such seminars were initiated and originally developed by Arpi several decades ago, they now facilitated by a consulting firm, the facilitator for this session being a young woman named Susan Karp. Mikaela and Tommy's plan hits a bit of a bump when others in the seminar, most specifically Arpi and Neil, have a different agenda, Neil's which is one walking in, and another as the seminar progresses. But Mikaela and Tommy may find that there are other issues affecting their speedy exit in time for food left in the trucks.

Avocado Crisis

Neil learns first hand that there is an avocado supply issue in Los Angeles - basically that there are none to be had - which is causing a panic among citizens in loving their avocados. He and staff meet with Adophus Hass, the main avocado grower supplying the city, he who tells them that a drought is the source of the problem. As other major organizations have anted up with money to solve the problem in getting water to his farm, he has come to the city for an additional financial handout. While Neil is approaching the end of his first one hundred days and needs a political win leading to his staff recommending providing that financial support to Adolphus, Neil, who never threw money at a problem he couldn't solve in a more practical way when he was in business, believes he can come up with such a practical as opposed to financial solution. He may be throwing his political career down the drain if he either cannot come up with that solution or if his solution is a failure. Meanwhile, Mikaela is battling a bout of insomnia, which is probably caused by stress, not helped that Neil often calls her in the middle of the night with one of his bright ideas. Mikaela has the idea that she can get Arpi unwittingly to be her sleeping remedy. Mikaela comes away with something else more practical from Arpi, but at a price.

Hearts Before Parts

Dropping Orly off at her first co-ed sleepover, Neil wants her to remember "hearts before parts" so she won't do anything foolish (sexual) with any of the boys just for the sake of sex. Then while she's away, Neil is caught by a paparazzo and posted on social media, having his own sleepover with Nicole, a woman Orly has never seen before, and Orly stamps his statement hypocritical....then learns that Nicole is just one of many "specials" solely in his bed. Meanwhile, Arpi, Mikaela, Tommy, and Jayden decide to take a break from checking the due-in-a-few-days budget when the first three learn that it's Jayden's milestone 40th birthday and decide to treat him to an outing at his favorite restaurant--on Trivia Night. Tommy and Arpi choose each other as an unbeatable team, leaving Mikaela and Jayden to pair up, and are surprised at the result. Completing the budget early the next day, the four are overcome by competitiveness to see not only which team is superior, but also which one of the four is superior.

Neil's latest pet project is the installation of transit only lanes, which the city doesn't have the money to implement. However, he learns indirectly that the city has a $50 million annual palm tree maintenance budget. The eradication of palm trees from the city has long been on Arpi's radar not only because of the cost, but that they are not even a species native to Los Angeles. Neil figures that because of the importance of palm trees to the business community in they taking advantage of the perception of Los Angeles being a palm tree city, the business community should pay at least part of the maintenance cost. In meeting with the business representatives, Neil doesn't want Arpi to attend to overtake the meeting, but he doesn't want her to know. Meanwhile, Jayden makes an important announcement at a staff meeting: that he will soon be a father, he having impregnated a woman he recently met named Samanthee. Mikaela and Tommy smell something fishy in Samanthee's story, and decide to come to Jayden's aid to exposing her for the fraud they believe she is. In the process, they may learn something about themselves and something unexpected about Samanthee.

Mr. Mayor's Magical L.A. Christmas

It's December 22nd, what most people in Los Angeles, including those in the Mayor's office who are working this day, consider Christmas Eve in it being the first day of the exodus away from non-festive Los Angeles for the 25th. Jayden believes most people want to escape Los Angeles solely because the city has no Christmas song dedicated to it, he who plans to work on his half-finished song, a so far fifteen year process. Of the staff, who probably wants to escape the most is Tommy, his flight back home to Pennsylvania today. He actually making the flight is placed in jeopardy when he has to deal with an issue of discarded Christmas trees by all the other people trying to escape Los Angeles. Neil is lamenting the fact that what he believes were the perfect personalized Christmas gifts (despite they all being the same) for the staff won't be arriving in time. In Orly pointing out to him what would be a better category of gifts, Neil comes up with a last minute replacement which also ends up being less than perfect. What Mikaela wants more than anything is someone, anyone, on her arms to take home for Christmas in not wanting to be the sole single, especially if it plays out like any of the stories in her perfect Christmas rom-com, Love Actually (2003). And while Arpi just wants everyone else to leave so that she can get some work done in peace, Mikaela may have to settle for second best in believing that Patrick, the city videographer who Arpi considers creepy, is secretly in love in Arpi who will have to get over her impressions of Patrick to fulfill Mikaela's secondary wish. In what seems to be a less than even satisfactory lead up to Christmas for everyone, something may turn the tides for this collective to help others in the true spirit of Christmas.
