Vienna, 1781. Mozart, aged 25, faces an uncertain future in a city where he has few friends. He finds solace and security with the Weber family, particularly with Constanze, with whom he falls in love. Their courtship faces challenges, with his father, Leopold, refusing to give his permission to Mozart to marry. Scandalously, they go ahead anyway, and a newborn baby follows quickly after. Fame and success also follows, but as Mozart creates his most rebellious and provocative work to date, an opera called The Marriage of Figaro, he ruffles the feathers of the elite patrons who have supported Mozart's rise to stardom.

Following his father's death, Mozart's music takes on a new level of intensity and emotional depth as he grapples with the numerous losses he has experienced in his short life. His opera Don Giovanni, which follows the success of The Marriage of Figaro, is marked by its unparalleled drama and sophistication - but the Viennese audience, including the emperor, find the music too intense. He is desperate to support his family in the face of an uncaring aristocracy that is tightening its purse strings, leaving freelancers like him out in the cold.
