Hailey and Rodrigo have started a sexual relationship, which usually means doing it at her crowded apartment. While Rodrigo happily embraces the term boyfriend despite perhaps not knowing its full connotation, Hailey struggles with what role he truly plays in her personal life, especially as she is venturing into the realm of being a conductor herself. That dichotomy plays itself out most pointedly as Hailey is heading home to visit her parents, Rodrigo who wants to come along to meet them, with Hailey adamantly against it, not only because of the uncertainty of where they are in their relationship, but because of who Rodrigo and her father are as people. Meanwhile, Rodrigo and Cynthia are having problems retaining conductors for the youth orchestra largely in having to work under Rodrigo's unrealistic expectations. But in the drummer, precocious Ricky, rising to those expectations at least about himself, Rodrigo goes to extreme measures to ensure Ricky lives up to those potentials. In the process, Rodrigo overtakes a meeting Thomas and Gloria, who have entered into their own sexual relationship, have with ballet troupe leader Egon, he having an unusual vision for his next project.

After the ten hour bus trip, Hailey and Rodrigo have arrived in Hailey's small North Carolina hometown where Hailey has been asked to lead a master class at the conservatory, her alma mater. In the difficult relationship she has with her parents, Keith and Amy, but especially Keith, Hailey does not want Rodrigo to tell them anything about her musical life in New York, including that she auditioned and failed to get into the orchestra, and that she is pursuing a career in conducting. Her parents make an announcement and a request for Hailey's stay, she having to decide if she will agree in potentially opening up the issues again with her father. Back in New York, Gloria receives news that a very VIP will be attending a concert and has made a request for repertoire. Upon hearing the news, Cynthia tells a little white lie to be able to return to the orchestra to perform in this concert. It's the evening of the orchestra's performance for the Pope, this day which coincides with Rodrigo moving into Hailey's apartment, he bringing a bit more than she expected. In what is arguably the biggest night in Gloria's life, she obviously wants everything to go perfectly. Rodrigo's proclamation to anyone and everyone who will listen that Hailey is his girlfriend (which Hailey feels undermines her professionally, especially as she is trying to convince attendee Caroline Shaw to allow the ensemble to debut one of her compositions) to Thomas' bombshell of news to her to ownership news of the Delgado Corporation are all minor issues in comparison to what comes crumbling down around Gloria and everyone else around her. In the aftermath, Hailey takes extreme measures to convince Caroline. Rodrigo receives two follow-up offers, one about which he is excited, the other a little less so. And Thomas finds that his new opportunity will have to be revisioned in finding out directly about the raw materials with which he has to work.

Episode 4
Fri, Feb 16, 201829 mins
Hailey learns that her application has been accepted to compete in what is the most prestigious conducting competition in the world. Despite Thomas being the one who made her apply, she further learns that he cannot coach her for the competition. With few other options, Hailey has to decide if she will ask Rodrigo to fill that role. She is also conflicted about which piece to perform, in either catering to the taste of the judges - which probably means performing something by a male composer - or staying true to her new vision of solely showcasing the works of female composers, and if so which piece. Thomas, while driving down the street, gets some inspiration on how to realize what he believes is Ludwig van Beethoven's true vision for a piece the philharmonic is working on and which they just don't have the capabilities to pull off on their own. And Rodrigo is feeling at a loss upon the "death" of his "vision" of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, whose parting words to Rodrigo were not to perform the Requiem. In wanting to bring Mozart's spirit back into his life if only to find out why he shouldn't perform the Requiem, Rodrigo plans to consult a clairvoyant, which also means finding a personal item of Mozart's. In Rodrigo, with Hailey by his side, meeting with the eccentric Morton Norton, considered the foremost collector of composer memorabilia, it is Hailey instead who receives some inspiration about her dilemmas concerning the competition.

Episode 5
Fri, Feb 16, 201828 mins
With the ensemble in the lead up to the conducting competition, Hailey has to decide if she should find better replacement musicians in certain sections at least for the competition, in addition to needing someone to play the flowerpots. In that aspect, she begins to hear certain musicians she knows with a new set of ears. With the orchestra, Gloria has to figure out how to emerge from the rubble that was the performance for the pope, she, without hearing the final product, banking on composer Hesby Ennis who has finally come through with a composition after being commissioned eight years ago. Gloria hedges her bets in Hesby being able to bring the orchestra back into prominence. And Rodrigo is still running away from the Requiem, about which he receives counsel from his new spirit muse (one he arguably does not want), he turning to Egon's experimental dance project with and about him. That experience channels into his coaching of Hailey. With the Queen's Phil, Thomas has some old friends stack the ensemble - one who probably shouldn't play - while he begins to experiment even more in overcoming the Phil's inherent musical deficiencies. He tries to usurp Gloria in the process. And Ricky's latest restaurant fill-in counsels him in the association between respect for music and respect in life.

Others somewhat unexpectedly there at the event are Gloria, who wants to ensure that nothing threatens Fukumoto's funding for the orchestra, and Betty, who has been Fukumoto's companion since they met. Betty may be an asset and in turn a hindrance for Gloria when it comes to "Fuku". Gloria may find she has other problems in Sadako, the competition's head judge. In being a newbie to conducting competitions, Hailey doesn't want her association, professional or personal, with Rodrigo to overtake what others may see in her. And Rodrigo inches ever closer to having to perform the now completed Requiem whether he wants to or not, in the continuing unspoken battle he has with Fukumoto and now Fukumoto's new prodigy, WAM. Rodrigo will find that he has to fight other battles in Japan in the belief by some that he is dead.

Things are not going well in the lead up to the debut of Hesby's composition which is to be preceded by the youth orchestra performing Ludwig van Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. The youth orchestra is out of its depth with their performance piece, and Fuku is threatening to pull his funding for the orchestra in what ended up being his inharmonious relationship with Rodrigo, with Gloria, at the orchestra helm, still sticking up for her Maestro. Rodrigo has, however, allowed Hailey to play the oboe for the performance in she helping out Arlen. Concurrently, Egon, despite turning the piece into one for Pablo Heras-Casado, has offered, at the last minute, the dance back to Rodrigo. If having a program, none of the youth orchestra performance, the Hesby performance or the dance performance turn out as written, which may be able to allow certain people to have a clearer view of the next phase of their life.
