Episode 1

Episode #1.1

Wed, Mar 6, 201959 mins

The Prime Minister has called the general election, and for the sixth election in a row, Max is meeting with the leading candidates, including the PM at Downing Street, to help him make up his mind on his media conglomerate's influential endorsement. Max returning to the scene in public ways places Caden back in the shadows. Caden does not want his father to know that he fired Maggie, the newspaper's long time leading political correspondent, for being in his word "disloyal", Maggie's departure which was somewhat mutual in not respecting Caden. In the process, Caden continues to deal with his emotional pain at the most private of times, including "self-medicating", even at work. The one thing that Max does want Caden to handle behind the scene is *the* issue with his mother's volunteer work which Max feels will be an embarrassment to the family despite Kathryn and Max long having been divorced. While Kathryn is happy to see Caden for whatever reason, she cannot help but have the thought, however small, that the situation behind the photos that Caden presents to her is indeed she being set up. Meanwhile, Maggie finds that her "retirement" is short-lived when she agrees to help Nick with a story on a murdered private detective, that agreement despite her own personal situation making this story her last and only if they shoot for who they believe is at the top behind whatever is going on.

Kathryn and Scott begin to spend more time together whenever she can fit the time in-between her hospital vigils. Using his wealth and power, Max has placed Caden in a military hospital in its mission to get its soldiers healthy and well enough, both physically and mentally, to return to the field. While Max conveniently heads to Mexico on a mixed business/personal trip, he leaves Kathryn to do the heavy lifting with the hospital, Colonel Reese, the hospital's administrator, who believes Caden's presence there undermines the ethos of the hospital and the military itself, and with Caden, who is not dealing well emotionally with what has happened to him and what he believes his future looks like. Regardless, some caring people among the hospital staff and patients, all who know who Caden is, may be able to provide some glimmer of hope for his recovery. Upon Max's return, something that he and Lauren orchestrate may undo all the positive work in Caden's recovery. Meanwhile, Tonia's dead body has been found. While Maggie asks some tough questions at a news conference on the issue, Nick, after speaking to his wife, may succumb to the pressure to go away quietly.

As requested, Max meets with Kathryn and Caden at the house. Although he knows their intention is to talk and have it out, Max has no intention of having a talk with them, he wanting to frame this get-together as just a family dinner to anyone who knows they are meeting, that ruse despite their last family dinner being twenty years ago, the specific date which Kathryn remembers in it being the day before a milestone in their life as a family unit. While Kathryn and Caden want to confront Max about his deceit as the cause of many of their problems as a unit, Caden further wants to confront him about his hypocrisy in expecting Caden to keep certain of his secrets while he happily exploits the secrets of others in his newspapers. Those secrets originate in part from Max's hate/admiration with his deceased father, Pennsylvania steel magnate Walter Finch, Max who tailored Walter's parenting style in his belief of what worked and didn't work in how he in turn has parented Caden.

Kathryn and Caden prepare to step up their attack against Max, they protecting others who may get caught in Max's line of fire, getting rid of anyone who may be spying on his behalf whether that be deliberate or inadvertent, and having a venue they believe will get their message out to the widest audience possible. With Caden's situation, Max cleans house at the newspaper as only a small part of his defense about what he knows is to come with Kathryn and Caden. Meanwhile, the Jaharis try to do damage control in light of the Reporter article - they in the process demonstrating behind closed doors that their family dynamic is much like the Finches - while Angela Howard believes she has made a coup in co-opting someone specific to her camp. And Scott tries to come clean to his mother - from who he is estranged - before she finds out the news in more public ways.

The Reporter's front page story divides the country, most against the decision to print it especially in light of what happened to Saif as a result of supporters of the story taking action. Some even in Max's own figurative house take issue with his decision to run the story. Because of Saif, the Prime Minister and Angela Howard have to decide whether to continue campaigning during the sensitive time period. Maggie, who is moving on with what little time she has left of her life, still tries to convince Kathryn to change her mind about letting Caden tell his story, Kathryn letting Caden make the choice for himself. Orla opening up about what is truly troubling her may help Caden make his decision. One of Max's actions as a follow-up of sorts to the story may be the last straw for Lauren, who is told in no uncertain terms that if she walks out, she will be locked out forever. Kathryn is also aware that Max's response if Caden does come clean will be something that no one will see coming; she's probably correct as that response affects her.

Despite giving him an emphatic no as a response, Kathryn is still contemplating accepting Max's offer, as those around her can see. She has to weigh the pros and cons of accepting the offer. Part of the consideration is what deal Max has struck with Angela Howard for his support, and Caden's welfare, he who is being released from the hospital. What Caden himself ends up doing once released may be outside of his conscious control, as someone new into his life knows all too well, while he and Orla have to decide if there is a future for them. Maggie, on her deathbed, is still trying to convince Caden, through Kathryn, to tell the complete story on the record. And the election is fast approaching, the polls showing that the race is too close to call, an Angela Howard victory which could drastically change the face of the country in ways she has not told the electorate. As he usually does, Max is leaving the country in the middle of the election, this time to see if he and Sofia can mend the issues in their marriage in the lead up to the birth of their son.
