Finn Kiesewetter doesn't have it easy. After his farm in the Uckermark region burns down, the indebted dropout returns to his old job as a police officer. This takes him, of all places, to his hometown, which he turned his back on as a teenager and which he had grown too small for years. A few surprises await him there: his childhood sweetheart, Elke Rasmussen, is now a public prosecutor and Finn's superior. Lars Englen, the head of this police station, is not only Finn's former classmate, to whom he has always been a thorn in his side, but also Elke's ex-husband, as Finn discovers on his first day. Lacking cash, Finn initially moves into his old childhood room with his aunts Ria and Toni, who run a tea shop in the old town. The two Hanseatic ladies are delighted by Finn's return and miss no opportunity to interfere in his private life or to find him a match. A suitable candidate seems to be the physiotherapist Klara. His first case takes Finn to Timmendorfer Strand, where the body of Lübeck marzipan manufacturer Lübbers was found. The industrialist had been suffocated with one of his homemade marzipan bars. Together with his down-to-earth, yet somewhat hypochondriac colleague Sandra Schwartenbeck, Finn begins the investigation. Lübbers wasn't particularly popular with his fellow residents, and so there are several possible perpetrators. His stepdaughter Jennifer, in particular, isn't fond of him. Her boyfriend, Thies, is an accountant at Lübbers' factory and had a tough time with his future father-in-law. Lübbers' wife, who knew about his affair with his secretary, and factory manager Hüpeden also have a motive. However, all the suspects have alibis. And so Finn has to think outside the box in his first case.

Culture is celebrated in the tea shop. A phone call rudely interrupts Finn Kiesewetter's recitation of Thomas Mann's "The Buddenbrooks": suspicion of unnatural causes of death. Pierced by a javelin, the young Philip Ahrens, scion of a respected Lübeck industrial family, collapsed in front of his brother Viktor's house. When Finn arrives at the crime scene, the man is already dead. The first clue in the search for clues is the spear, which came from the gymnasium of the Karolineum Gymnasium, where Ahrens was a coach for the annual senior pentathlon. But who there could have an interest in his death? Was it jealousy? Apparently, the dead man had a fling with student Svea Abel. At the very least, her boyfriend Andrej appears highly suspicious during questioning. Or was the victim set up by a creditor? After all, the investigation reveals that Ahrens had massive debts and was addicted to gambling. But his brother Viktor and his wife Xenia also have a motive, as the younger brother stayed out of all the business dealings but needed vast sums of money. Perhaps the school janitor had something to do with it. Which of these suspects was angry and determined enough to impale Philip Ahrens?

To find out what Donner, alias "Hulk," was doing in Lübeck, Finn Kiesewetter and Sandra Schwartenbeck follow various leads. They check the residents of the houses near the forest parking lot. First, there is farmer Karla Vahl, who lives alone on a large farm. She has rented out a house on her farm to the painter Olsson and his daughter Natalie. Sandra Schwartenbeck, who is even working overtime because of her boyfriend Holger's lovesickness, discovers that Vahl is in financial difficulties and suspects that she may have had trouble with the debt collector "Hulk." Twelve-year-old Natalie Olsson reinforces the police's suspicions. But little by little, more and more suspects emerge: How is gallery owner Leonie Osterspring involved in the case? "Hulk" had spoken to her on the phone before his death. It also turns out that the painter Olsson works as an art forger. Is he involved in the murder? When Mr. Schröter is persuaded by Finn to pose as an art lover in undercover investigations, more than just Schröter's hidden talents come to light.

But it soon becomes clear that Sandy is a thief, but not a murderer. Did Marie return to Lübeck to search for her lost child? Finn's investigations reveal that Marie Guteson had last been in contact with a private detective from Lübeck before her death. Lubecker pop singer Hauke Østerbotten is the victim of an assassination attempt: He is driving his motorboat through Lubecker's Ibsen Canal and is decapitated by a diamond wire cable stretched across the canal. Finn Kiesewetter learns from the victim's father that the pop singer was on his way to a reconciliation meeting with him and his wife Andrea when the murder occurred. Thomas Østerbotten and his son Hauke hadn't had any contact for months and were planning to meet at his father's villa that evening. But the family conflict in the Østerbotten household may not have been the real reason for the attack. It was probably directed at someone who sails the canal much more regularly: for example, the shady barge captain Klaus. On canal trips, Captain Klaus sails tourists past the impressive villas and recounts anecdotes about the residents and their wealth. One of these anecdotes led to the marble merchant Klatt, who also lives on the Ibsen Canal alongside his father Østerbotten, being attacked and robbed some time ago. Klatt therefore has a strong motive for attempting to murder the captain - and Hauke Østerbotten may have only been a coincidence. During the search of the Klatt villa, Finn and his team do indeed find remnants of the diamond wire rope. Klatt denies the crime but has no alibi - the case seems to be solved. But then the tables turn, and the investigators discover that the actual perpetrator may have cleverly shifted suspicion onto Klatt.

Gustav Erikson is found dead by his secretary on Hüxstraße in Lübeck; he had been beaten to death. Forensic investigators find a crumpled manuscript page from Didier Moretti's new erotic novel in the mouth of the publisher of erotic literature. The otherwise insignificant Lübeck author had become rich and famous with his bestseller "Conductor of Love" - and with him his publisher, Erikson. The page of the follow-up novel in the dead man's mouth makes Moretti a suspect. And he's not the only one under suspicion. The victim's wife, Elisabeth Erikson, is also a possible perpetrator. However, she has an alibi for the time of the crime. While Mr. Schröter discovers the literary world for himself and attempts to write his own bestseller, Finn Kiesewetter and Sandra Schwartenbeck devote themselves to the investigation. Moretti, who has a large fan base in Lübeck - including Finn's aunt Ria - enjoyed great success with "Conductor of Love," but his earlier novels are denounced as trash. Mrs. Erikson tells investigators about threatening letters her husband has received. Among the enemies of the murdered erotic publisher are the Henning couple, who own a small printing business. But what do they have to do with Erikson's murder? Meanwhile, Schröter is already presenting the first pages of his textbook - completely copied, as Lars Englen immediately notices. This gives Finn an interesting idea regarding the murder case.
