In Dümpelbach, a neighboring town of Hengasch, the residents make a pilgrimage to the Chapel of St. Mary, as they do every year. There, on a small hill, the Holy Virgin once appeared and performed miracles; in gratitude, the people of Dümpelbach built a small chapel for her. But after this year's procession, no miracle happens, but a murder: a young woman is found dead in the small church - she was stabbed. Sophie is alerted, as is her colleague Andreas Zielonka from Koblenz, because the chapel lies exactly on the border between North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate. As it cannot be determined with certainty who is responsible for the murder, Sophie and Zielonka have to work together reluctantly, which they don't particularly like, as they are both ambitious. And then there is this unfortunate attraction between them... Apparently no one knows who the dead woman is, not even Heike, Dietmar's wife, who otherwise knows everything and knows everyone. But little by little, Sophie and Zielonka uncover the secret of the mysterious woman, who herself looks a bit like the Madonna, but otherwise had little of the virginity.

Shots in the forest - during the closed season: That shouldn't happen, it's not right, think Bärbel and Sophie, and they set off into the dark forest to catch the alleged poacher. And Dietmar subjects his wife to a tough interrogation - he suspects that Heike may know more about the poaching, as the day before there was fresh(!) roast wild rabbit at Schäffers - including shotgun pellets. Heike puts him on the trail of a young Pole, an illegal harvest worker on a fruit farm. He ran off a few days ago with his boss's shotgun after trying to rape his boss's wife and murder his boss: at least that's what the boss, ruler of hundreds of apple trees and his beautiful wife, reports. Meanwhile, Sophie and Bärbel wander through the forest, which has changed a lot thanks to Kyrill, the hurricane of 2007. So much so that they no longer know where they are. And then, to their great horror, they are kidnapped.

But this time, instead of rotten eggs or dead guinea pigs, there is a corpse in the garden - the lawyer Sylvia has drunk a lethal cup of tea that was flavoured not only with rum, but also with a pinch of E605. Did she do this voluntarily or did she have no idea what she was swallowing? At first glance, it seems clear: it was the Gottliebs. But Sylvia's flatmates and her fiancé from abroad also had good reasons for wanting to hasten her demise a little - Sylvia was wealthy. But Sophie eventually discovers that there could be another reason, one that is as old as humanity - jealousy.

But Sophie doesn't have much time to deal with her private life, because something unheard of, never seen before in the Eifel, is happening: In the middle of the huge dish of the Zwiebelfeld radio telescope, a corpse is hanging as if on an oversized and high-tech pillory. But this time, at least, it wasn't an Eifel resident who had to die, but the highly decorated Hamburg astrophysicist Baade. Is his cool blonde wife Hilla behind the murder? Or one of Baade's scientific competitors? Sophie and her officers soon realize that in this case someone is deliberately playing cat and mouse with them - and the motives for this murderous game lie far, far in the past, when there was an emotional big bang.

So much for yesterday's news - Sophie has now got involved in an affair with veterinarian Kauth, which has more advantages than anything else. For example, she has to assist in the birth of twin calves before she starts work, which upsets her more than the sight of a corpse. When winegrower Hubert Kreuzberg leads the officers to a small, dead body lying in the middle of his vineyard, the horrified officers initially believe it is a child. But it is the small thief and fence Arno Hümmel, who was released from prison just two days ago. What brought him to the Eifel and to Kreuzberg's vineyard? And who maltreated his little skull with a large bottle of red wine? During their research, the officers quickly come across a legendary bottle of 1959 Pinot Noir, the "Dernfelder Schieferchen", which was supposedly signed by Kennedy and is believed to be lost. Was this dream of every wine lover and collector the reason why Hümmel came to the Eifel? And what about Kreuzberg? Does he know more about the whereabouts of the "Schieferchen" and the murder than he admits? And - last but not least and irrelevant to the case - could Kauth be the man for life? The village, especially Heike, discusses the latter with fervor and has the answer ready: yes. But does Sophie see it that way too?

Walzing Mathilde

For a change, it is not just any violent criminal, but veterinarian Kauth who is putting the gun to Sophie's head: he wants to turn their affair into a solid relationship, and even move in with her. Before Sophie makes a decision, she first solves the mystery of the seriously injured electrician Poppelrath, who is lying in the garden of the housewife Kafka with an inexplicable head injury and a heart attack. Is the blame really on the newly arrived man from East Germany, who is behaving in a highly suspicious manner - at least in the eyes of the Hengaschers? Or does the victim's pathologically jealous wife have a hand in it? And has a crime even been committed? If so, Sophie is the only police officer who is interested, because Dietmar prefers to deal with a series of strange spy cameras in Hengascher bedrooms, and Bärbel is a total failure because he is finally in love. Since she fell head over heels for the carpenter Mathilde, she has not been able to think clearly. In contrast to Sophie, who, with plenty of selfishly motivated support from Zielonka senior, has to realize that her love for Kauth is not enough to fundamentally change her life in favor of a relationship, Bärbel realizes one thing above all: love has more facets than she previously suspected.

Sophie is surprised - and Bärbel explains: The reason why Heike and Dietmar have been so distracted lately is the giftedness of their son Kevin. And because Kevin has problems with "normal" school thanks to his oversized IQ, he is supposed to move into the elite boarding school Lobberich, which is very close to Hengasch. Before Kevin is accepted there as a scholarship student, his future teacher Dr. Kroy unfortunately drops dead: heart attack - at least that's what Dr. Bechermann, the district gynecologist, who is all too often on emergency duty, says. And his diagnosis also seems logical, since Dr. Kroy had a pacemaker. However, two of the boarding school students now claim that they hacked the pacemaker because Kroy treated them unfairly. Sophie thinks that's utter nonsense - there would be a huge death of teachers if students could do something like that - and she turns out to be right. The autopsy shows that Kroy's pacemaker was working perfectly; however, it was still not a natural death, as Kroy's body contains a huge amount of cocaine that was evidently not taken intentionally. So it was murder after all. Since Kroy was very unpopular, there are plenty of students and colleagues who could have been suspected of the crime.

Sophie feels increasingly lonely in Hengasch and seriously considers leaving the police force and returning to Cologne. However, she is somewhat distracted from her gloomy thoughts by another murder: hardware store owner Pfaff is shot while Nordic walking in front of his wife and an employee. Pfaff ran his hardware store with an iron fist, and a number of recent incidents indicate that he had enemies - but is the perpetrator really to be sought in the wider community? Because the best motives for the crime actually come from the people who were present at the murder. But how could they have done that? While Sophie tries to unravel the secrets of two marriages that are not really working well, a partnership is working brilliantly: Heike and Dietmar have driven to Holland in a camper van and are enjoying their second honeymoon there despite the pouring rain.
