A TV producer has gotten the idea of developing a movie based off of the events of Monk's capture of Steve Wagner in "Mr. Monk and the Astronaut." They have hired renowned actor David Ruskin to play Monk. However, to get into the role of Monk, Ruskin shadows his character for a couple of days as Monk investigates the linked homicides of a young woman killed in her apartment and a pawnshop owner shot dead during a robbery. However, things get bad when Ruskin gets a little too into the role of Monk.

Mr. Monk and the Garbage Strike

The San Francisco sanitation union has gone on strike, demanding better pay from the city. As a result, garbage collection has stopped and the streets are now lined with trash bags. Monk, naturally, has a hard time dealing with the stench. Things get worse, though, when union boss Jimmy Cusack is found dead in his office of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, bringing negotiations to a halt. Monk finds evidence of foul play, but the stench causes him to make outrageous accusations against the mayor, and even Alice Cooper.

Natalie decides that the time has come for Monk to branch out and become a full-fledged private investigator. He's not keen on the idea and is quite happy with what he does. She doesn't give him much choice however as she's already gone ahead and rented office space. She's even had business cards printed for him. His first case isn't to his liking either. Local real estate agent Linda Fusco hires him to find out who clipped her car in the marina parking lot causing $900 damage. He quickly figures out who caused the crash but more interestingly, there's a direct link to a murder.

Monk and Natalie go to Berkeley for Monk's 25th college reunion. While there, Monk runs into his college acquaintance Dianne Brooks. However, as the reunion unfolds, Monk becomes suspicious of Dianne's husband Kyle. After Captain Stottlemeyer shows up at the campus while checking out the murder of a beloved clinic nurse, Monk realizes that there is a murder plot involving Dianne.

Greg 'Stork' Murray (Terry Fradet) is an aspiring songwriter who works for the rock band Trafalgar as a roadie, and, thanks to his girlfriend Kendra Frank (Tamara Feldman), is a recovered drug addict. He has written a song about his ex-wife and daughter, called "Peggy's Gone to Memphis", and to help him jumpstart a new career, he agreed to have singer Kris Kedder (Brad Hunt) take co-credit for the song. But the night before the San Francisco Band Jam rock concert, Stork is furious to find on the latest album that Kedder has taken all of the credit for "Peggy's Gone to Memphis," and confronts him. Rather than have his career be tarnished, Kedder smashes a beer bottle over Stork's head, injects him with a lethal dose of heroin, and stuffs him into a port-a-potty. The next day, Monk and Natalie discover the body while attending the concert to search for Captain Stottlemeyer's runaway son Jared (Monk unintentionally because he misinterpreted the phrase "rock show" to mean "geology exhibit"). Although the police want to write Stork's death off as an accidental overdose, Kendra refuses to accept the official story and ropes Monk and Natalie into investigating the crime.

Mr. Monk Meets His Dad

It's Christmas time and Monk gets a call to go to the station. When he arrives, he is told that his father, whom he hasn't seen in 39 years, has been arrested. Monk learns that the man is not the one he was told he was; that he is a trucker and that he asked Monk to come to the station to help him get out of jail. It seems he has a lot of deliveries to make. The gang convinces Monk to go with him and while on the road, Monk lets out some of the pent up feelings he has. But he also wonders why he is taking such an unusual route like he's going back and forth when he could be going straight to his destinations, but his father's boss insists that he follow his route.

One day after farmer Harvey Disher is seen having an argument with his neighbor Jimmy Belmont, Harvey turns up dead in his truck, apparently having shot himself after accidentally running over his prize-winning pig. His nephew Randy inherits the farm, quits his job at the SFPD and decides to take a stab at running the property. But he soon gets suspicious about the circumstances of his uncle's death, and calls Monk up to investigate.

Monk and Stotllemeyer are investigating the death of a woman. But suddenly another murder occurs wherein the person was killed in an unusual manner. And a note is left on the body saying that there will be more in about 30 hours. A special unit shows up to take charge of the case and they tell them that nothing else matters even the woman whose murder they were investigating. Monk thinks the time on the note is strange. And they appear to be chasing their tails. Monk thinks something else is going on but the man in charge of the unit doesn't think so.
