Following the death of his wife, John York decides to leave his troubles behind with an extended vacation away from home, but unable to rest, takes sleeping pills the night before he leaves. Shortly thereafter, he's awakened by a stranger pounding furiously on his front door. The visitor claims to be a psychiatrist who is being pursued by her deranged patient. York must then fight the effects of the sleeping pills as he tries to protect the psychiatrist and himself as the hulking psychopath attempts to gain entry to the house.

Marital bliss quickly degenerates into terror for newlywed Carol Madsen. After she and husband Paul move into a new apartment, they're plagued by a series of anonymous, menacing phone calls that drive Carol to hysteria. The only clue to the perpetrator's identity is the ambient noise of a barking dog.

Highway patrolman Jeff Saunders nearly becomes the victim of a brazen bank holdup when he's almost struck by one of the getaway cars. After giving chase, the car crashes, killing one of the robbers. Saunders and the local sheriffs attempt to track down the robber's accomplices through modern police detection; however, the solution to the case may originate from a far simpler method of deduction -the car's radio.
