Wellington quickly closes the case of a missing woman, being preoccupied by expectations from the brass that he trains Oliver Fitzroy, high-born but a consistent klutz. After impatiently provoking a wealthy client who refuses to pay for Scarlet's services in searching missing birds, she takes the disappearance case with the sister as client. It leads to the prestigious warehouse where she worked for Salisbury, but soon stumbles onto more irregularities involving staff.

William is forced to turn screw-up apprentice Oliver Fitzroy into a good detective, or pretend so as his powerful father demands a last chance success, promised the the Scotland Yard brass, despite Oliver fainting under opium influence, but he shows brains and initiative. Eliza is laughed away as not credible by a potential client society of socialite women, but hired by an insurance company to investigate the disappearance of a rare sketch by Charles Darwin from a petty museum run by the estranged wife of a respectable natural scientist. William is officially on the case, which proves more complicated when it turns out the insurance company that hired her doesn't exist, unlike a Dutch one who sent their own man, but one of several fronts used by a dodgy lawyer, and a German crone's death after she talked to Scarlett, with fraud discovered.

A Pauper's Grave

The police arrests Scarlett again for breaking into the local morgue, but she's innocently charged with a series of thefts from successive morgues. Wellington believes her innocent of those, but she escapes from his office while superintendent Munro decrees full rigor as the well-connected chief coroner Thackery is livid. Fearing to be taken off the case -as occurs formally- or worse, William investigates the burglaries and later entrusts guarding her, caught again, to clumsy gentleman apprentice Fitzroy, whose health proves weak for the job, so they consider desk duties. Criminal informers are approached via dodgy Jamaican Moses -by both- and Scarlett's prostitute friend and hide-out, while worried Ivy probes and seduces with a dinner the coroner Stannard under false alias. All points to grave-robbery, with a criminal past twist.

Angel of Inferno

Although Oliver Fitzroy performs well as Wellington's research detective, his father police commissioner Fitzroy literally knocks the 'family disgrace' a black eye and forces superintendent Munro to reassign him to field duty, but now under clueless Phelps, until William can requisition him for 'encyclopedic skills'. Phelps is indeed also taking charge of the case of a medicine firm being blackmailed repeatedly with poisoning by use of a rare plant. Scarlett is hired by them but finds a competitor with far greater resources on the case, with a reporter lurking, while William's help is as vital as ever and the knowledgeable Royal Society only helpful when Scarlett poses as socialite candidate-member and flirts with the president. A next, near-fatal poisoning strikes the Indian founding partner's heir, and the motive may be indirect as a bankruptcy might enable a charitable project.

Superintendent Munro insists Wellington should take a promotion as chief inspector and move to Glasgow, later clarifying it's the honorable way to avoid the wrath of the commissioner for 'ruining' Oliver, who actually would be lost without William, who hence insists he must mingle with colleagues, but their abuse in the police pub only results in a bloody face. Wellington reluctantly hires Scarlett on accountant of her literary acquaintance with the crime mystery works of Samuel Bedborough, whose accountant was murdered in the exact way of one of his books, and as that suggests the same happens to the author's publisher next. The puzzle can only be solved by uncovering the gravely indebted, alcoholic author's own secret.

The Proposal
