Paul Callan investigates modern miracles for the Catholic Church. While working on a case involving a terminally-ill boy who supposedly can heal people, Paul witnesses his true miraculous power but also faces a sinister demonic entity known as Darkness. However, the Church dismisses all his findings, so the ever-more-disillusioned Paul quits and continues his work with private investigators: scholarly Alva Keel, who believes that Paul is on a path to become a powerful force for either good or evil; and his aide Evelyn Santos, who used to work as a cop.
