Norman Mailer, Samantha Shortcake

Thu, Mar 24, 202231 mins

Joyce experiences her first police raid as an employee of Bottom Dollar Publications, this the nineteenth and counting, Richie and Bambi telling her that they happen a few times a year. But this raid is different in that the police didn't give them a head's up as they usually do, Doug learning it's because he has not yet greased the wheels with the new councilor, Bridget Westbury, who issued the raid. Doug will find that dealing with Councilor Westbury will not be as easy as other councilors in she being elected on a "clean up the valley" platform. While Doug looks in his regular toolkit of measures that have worked in the past, Tina believes it's time she took the bad cop role in their good cop/bad cop partnership. The confiscation part of the raid left only Minx with enough material to be published of the thirteen magazines. However, the raid scared off all of Joyce's contributing writers, who have pulled their articles. With Doug preoccupied with the councilor, he has left Joyce to figure out how to replace the space that would have been taken up with those articles.

An exciting new chapter in the annals of erotica

Thu, Mar 24, 202232 mins

Upon the magazine's release, Bottom Dollar is holding a press conference. As Shane is the face of the first edition, he the reason that the majority of the target audience will buy it, Doug wants him there beside Joyce conducting the press conference. While Doug knows most if not all of the questions from the press will be meaningless fluff questions to Shane, Joyce is hoping some serious journalist will ask about her concept of the magazine, and as such she wants Shane to be able to articulate the same feminist ideals if such questions are asked of him. The problem is is that Shane is stereotypical beefcake in not having a thought in his head, let alone thoughts that he can articulate. As such, Joyce becomes the Henry Higgins to Shane's Eliza Doolittle in preparation for the press conference. Joyce takes the teacher/student relationship far beyond what Henry Higgins probably did, causing problems not only at the press conference but for the magazine in its entirety, which may only be exacerbated by a specific member of the press in the audience. Meanwhile, Bottom Dollar is preparing for an audit in their continuing battle with Councilor Westbury. Even with her layperson eyes, Tina can see that by the poorly kept books there is a missing amount totaling somewhere in the vicinity of $50,000, Gerry the most obvious culprit. But wanting to be thorough, Doug and Tina question Doug's ragtag collection of employees comprised of ex-cons, people hired in bars when Doug was drunk, and the like, which may make finding the culprit more difficult, or will it?

Episode 5

Relaying news of a wayward snake

Thu, Mar 31, 202232 mins

Joyce learns of yet another unknown aspect of the business, Minx's first edition which has caused a problem with a key niche demographic related to what was that unknown. While the male nudity is not a problem, the article on birth control is to Francesca, the Italian Catholic wife of Doug's distributor, Vince, a Mob boss. As such, Minx may jeopardize Bottom Dollar's distribution as a whole, "legitimate" distributors who would not touch his business for various reasons. Doug's labor-intensive solution to the "Francesca" problem leads to another problem when Joyce sees the working conditions at the distribution center, her riling up the labor which does not sit well with Vince. Doug feels that Joyce needs to smooth things over with Vince directly, she to accompany Doug to meet with Vince. The meeting at what ends up being Vince and Francesca's adolescent son Vito's birthday party does not go according to plan, with Doug and Joyce separated along gender lines. While Doug fears for his life in a misstep with Vince and his cronies, Joyce gets an education in the Italian wives' feminism in what is outwardly an extremely un-feminist situation. With Doug and Joyce preoccupied with the distribution situation, Tina is left at the office to deal with the unrest stemming from many of the "other" staff feeling like Minx is getting special treatment.

Episode 6

Mary had a little hysterectomy

Thu, Mar 31, 202229 mins

The next problem with the first edition of Minx, which has hit the newsstands, is that it hasn't hit the newsstands. Joyce, in wanting to see her baby in all its glory in the world in visiting a convenience store, finds that it is not on the main rack or even the visible rack behind the counter with all the other adult magazines, but rather hidden underneath the counter with all the other "smut", she aware that suburban housewives will not buy it if they have to ask for it, and may not even know about it as they can't see it. A bigger problem, at least for Doug, is that a major retailer has sent back all their copies in refusing to sell it, the difference between it and all of Bottom Dollar's other publications being the display of genitalia, female genitalia in the other publications being hidden by pubic hair. Tina knows this issue could ruin the business especially as they don't have the cash on hand to sustain such a hit of buying back all those copies. Doug, who is feeling the pressure more so with this threat to the company, comes up with the idea of giving away as many of those copies as possible to get the magazine into the public consciousness, Shelly and Bambi teaming up to hit the suburban housewives where they live, while Richie hits another demographic, the gay male. Tina knows that Doug has to deal with this problem directly, which he he seems ill-equipped to do. Despite this problem, they still talk about what to do for the second edition, the idea of a feature interview which has wings. While Doug wants someone commercial like football player Billy Brunson, Joyce wants a known feminist. Not having the contacts herself, Joyce slyly approaches Glenn who may have more names in his Rolodex than her, he more than accommodating despite their personal situation. Glenn's suggestion of author and academic Wendy Mah garners mixed reactions from Joyce, who sees her work as "feminism light" but whose latest bestseller makes her a name. Joyce and Glenn's meeting with Wendy at the local Woodbridge College where Wendy teaches leads to a series of problems for the pair and Minx.

God Save the Queen of Dicks

Thu, Apr 7, 202229 mins

Minx's fortune seems to be turning upward with all the press from the outrage, especially from Joyce and Glenn's trip to Brookswood College. As such, Doug believes the old adage that there is no such thing as bad press, about which Joyce doesn't agree in much of that bad press directed squarely at her, including receiving death threats, what Doug considers a badge of honor. The exposure only inflames Councilor Westbury's feelings toward Bottom Dollar. While she can be a loose cannon, Doug allows Joyce one interview to get her side of the story out. But a bad experience makes Joyce a little press shy. An encounter with Glenn before a scheduled radio program interview with a couple of stereotypical good ol' boys makes Joyce walk into the interview with a different viewpoint. While they celebrate their luck in realizing their fortunes could have easily have gone south, Doug and Tina realize that their good fortunes on Minx's back may have a shelf life. Meanwhile, Rich's work has been noticed by Edward Shawn of the prestigious Edward Shawn Gallery of West Hollywood. Initially flattered by Edward's invitation to meet, Richie ultimately feels out of his league with the proverbial beautiful people in the Los Angeles art scene, that is unless someone or somethings boost his confidence.
