Called to the village of Midsomer Market to investigate someone's car being set on fire, Barnaby and Troy soon find themselves investigating the murder of Marjorie Empson who is found in her home bludgeoned to death. The focus of their attention is the Reading Club, a group of five women who meet regularly not to discuss books in fact, but to manage a investment fund they have established. Two of the members were hoping to cash out their investments, but were prevented from doing so by the others. There are several other suspects, all in one way or another connected to the financial and investment world, but when a second member of the book club is killed, the police realize they may need to look for an altogether different motive.

The information provided by two inquisitive children, who see the investigation as a fascinating game, proves invaluable in solving the crime.

Murder is in the air in the village of Midsomer Wellow as Barnaby and Troy investigate the death of Greg Tutt, who was shot through the heart. He was a member of the local bell ringers and the village Lothario, whose fed-up wife had recently thrown him out. Greg had also been eyeing Emma who's engaged to Liam; these two are both members of the bell-ringing team. Reggie Barton leads a group of villagers who are opposed to the bell ringers using the church as a hobby, especially after their impromptu concert celebrating their big win at the track with their pooled funds. When a second bell ringer is killed, Barnaby tries to connect the recent deaths with church lore about a vicar who was killed and dumped down the well a century ago.

Murder on St. Malley's Day

The Devington school has a long history of educating the privileged members of society and many have gone on to illustrious careers, such as in the Diplomatic Service. The Talbot family in particular has a long association with the school with three generations having attended. When Daniel Talbot is killed during the St. Malley's Day race, the same day his elderly grandfather dies of natural causes, Barnaby and Troy investigate. They find ongoing feuds between the school and villagers, a conspiracy theorist who thinks the school is the center of criminal activity, students who are having drinking parties at the local pub and the ongoing affairs of the school's secretive Pudding Club. The discovery of a long-held school secret leads to the discovery of the murderer.
