When a handyman is killed on the way home from the local glamping site in wolf hunter MO, complete with cane prints, Barnaby and IT-smarter Winter must investigate if this myth has become murderous reality. While they look for the cane and everybody involved with the victim, cafe and camping, a similar murder follows on a glamping guest.

When local Naomi Ashworth is found murdered and displayed as a scarecrow, Barnaby and Winter investigate. They learn that her father, Reverend Oscar Hayden, won the lottery twelve years ago but donated only a fraction, so many of the villagers don't approve of his position. Later, he is also found killed similarly in his church. Thea Stannard is also murdered and dressed like a scarecrow. Barnaby and Winter must find the murderer before someone else is killed..

The Midsomer Mummers, an amateur Operatic Society, are busy rehearsing for their charity Gilbert&Sullivan concert, The Pirates of Penzance, when the body of an unknown man, later identified as Vince Summersby, is found in the prop treasure chest on stage. The theater is owned by the local rich family, but the matriarch and her niece, the director, can't agree about modernization, risking bankruptcy. While the preparations are still underway, Katisha Empson dies falling down the stairs. Her niece, Phyllis Fernsby, tells Barnaby of her suspicion that Katisha's slick doctor, Simon Charteris, might have been involved in her aunt's death as it is revealed that he was the main beneficiary of her will. Later, Graham Handsworth is found dead at the theatre's stage, and Jeremy Whittingdale almost gets murdered on the night before the Pirates of Penzance premiere. Barnaby and Winter realize that the culprit must be someone connected to the play, but among various treachery stumble just in time on a far-fetched suspect and old motive.
