Midsomer's 'Paramount Dance Extravaganza' dance contest is being hosted by the Wilder Biorobotics Institute. After the first night of the competition, a professional dancer who was not in the competition is found dead under suspicious circumstances. DCI Barnaby and DS Winter begin their investigation, but it's not long before the brother of the victim is also found dead, being struck on the head by a remotely controlled robotic arm. The investigators focus on the wealthy Wilder family and discover the usual deceptions, secrets and betrayals before they find the killer.

Jamie partakes in Solomon Gorge's annual psycho mud run, but the last-minute rerouting sabotages the fishing contest with a huge prize for the legendary lake monster, fish Ahab, revived after years by tackle shop owner Freddie Lamb. The run is canceled after glass splinters in the water injure contestants, but retired DCI Arthur 'Artie' Blythe convinces Barnaby to investigate with Jamie and reopen it. Punk team leader Lex Bedford, former champion fisher till he left town years ago, is electrocuted next night. Lex's former employee Harper Kaplan confesses the sabotage, being employed having decided lover Simone's father Ned Skye to refuse him her hand. Ned is murdered and dropped in the tackle shop. Next night fisherman Cornelius Tetbury, a cheater, wearing Griffin Twigg's flashy hat, is murdered by catapult from behind and dumped in the freezer at Lamb's wood cabin. Dragghing, a corpse in a car in the lake is identified as publican Izzy Silvermane's presumed-runaway daughter Lola, fatally run-over with that jeep, beloved of Freddie whom she didn't part from three years ago, someone sent Lola postcards to pretend she's alive, probably pro fisher Blaise McQuinn, who waved Griffin's warning she's next if the's the intended victim, as one of Lex's celebratory party who hit Lola, including Ned. Also suspect are Lex's grimly estranged mentor Damian Lint and Lola's secret father.
